ttnitnl finder ISAAC HULLOF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND J. FERGUSON MORSELL.
Letters Patent No. 84,061, dated November 17, 1868.
IMPROVED BEEN-HOLDER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same."
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC HULL, of Stamford, in
the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Rein-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which 1 Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved reinholder.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on the plane of the line a; x, fig. 1,
My invention consists in an improved device for holding driving-reins, composed of a clamp and spring combined together, the one for clasping the dash-board of the vehicle, and the other for clamping the reins placed-between it and one jaw of the clamp, whereby I produce an exceedingly simple and eflicient device for holding carriage-reins during a temporary absence from ones carriage.
A designates a clamp, which, preferably, I make of I steel, said clamp having two jaws, a I), (see fig. 2,)
which clasp the dash-boardof the carriage on oppo- This clamp may be covered with leather, or be japanned, or otherwise protected from rust, or rendered ornamental. I have shown it as covered with leather, which is secured by stitching around its edges.
B designates a spring, which, preferably, I construct of steel, and which may be covered with leather, or be japanned, or otherwise protected from rust. I have shown it as covered with leather, which is secured to it by stitching around its edges. The said spring is secured to that side of the clamp A which faces the inside of the carriagpjand it may be so secured in any suitable way. I have shown the covering of the. spring securely stitched to the covering of the clamp at a point beyond the metal, as being a simple and efficient manner of securing the two parts together.
In using the device, the reins are to be taken in the hand and pressed between the spring B and the clamp A; and this can be easily done by pressing slightly outward the said spring B, as is obvious. The spring B holds the reins securely, and there is no liability of their getting under the horses feet, and they are always in a position to be quickly seized on entering a carriage. The device is simple, and can be very cheaply constructed.
I am aware that springs have been employed for holding driving-reins, applied to the dash-board of a carriage in various ways, but I am not aware of any 7 device of the same or substantially the same construction as that herein shown and described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for holding driving-reins, composed of the clamp A and spring B, constructed and operating substantially as herein specified.
ISAAC HULL.
