ILPEFERS, PHOIUUTHOGRAPHEIL WASHINGTON. n. C.

JOSEPH LETOHWORTH, OF- BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 96,016, dated October 19, 1869.
The Scheule xefenfed to in these Letten Patent mlnaldnjg'part ofthe same,
To alll whom 'it may-concern.-
vBe it known that I, JosrAH LnTcHwoRTH, of the city of Bulalo,in the county of Erie, and State of N ew York, have invented a' certain new and useful Im' provement in Breast-Strap Attachments; and I do hereby declare that vthe following isa full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is aV perspective view of' my improved attachment.
Figure II is a longitudinal section of the same, at-
cached to the breast-strap.
Figure III is a cross-section.
Like. letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures.
My improvement relates to thatclass of inventions.
known as breast-strap slides, which consists -of a metal casting, attached to the breast-strap, to protect the leather from the abrading action of the neck-yoke ring, and to retain, or partially retain the said ring in place at the centre of the strap.
In the manufacture of light castings, the great object to attain is cheapuess of construction, Vas the saleability of such articles as breast-strap slides depends mainly on the price, many devices, otherwise good, having failed of' success, on account ot' the cost required to manufingers, cast at right angles to thev plate, -which are afterward bent down, so aslto overlap the edges ot the strap on the outsidejand by clamping the strap against the corrugated surface, securely hold the attachment in place, without -the use ot` rivets, or other expensive fastening.
In thedrawings- A. represents .my improved attachment. curved in the usual manner, with a nange, a, at tne edges, which serve to stilen the plate, and assist in retaining the strap d in-place.v
t c' are the transverse corrugations on the outer side, against which the strap comes in contact.
b b are the fingers, cast so as to project at right an gles from the mainplate, as shown in Figs. I and III, where one of the Iingers is represented. as bent down, and the other in the position in which it is cast.
The plate being applied tothe strap, as shown, the lingers, overlapping the edges of the strap ou the outside, will serve to clamp vthe latter with snicient force against the corrugations t, to prevent the attachmentV which, by indenting the leather, will render thev attachment still more unyielding.
What I claim as my invention, is The breast-strap attachment A, as a new article ot' manufacture, cast of malleable iron, with/fingers c c and transverse eorrugatiou i, substantially as and forl the purpose hereinbefo're set forth.
- JOSIAH LETOHWORTH.
