Description

(No Model.)
G. W. BONECUTTER.
' BUGGY TOP.-
No. 316,442. Patented Apr. 2.8, 1885.
UNITED Srafrns GEORGE W. BONEOUTTER, OF UNIONVILLE, MISSOURI. l
BUGGY-TO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,442, dated April 28, 1885.
Application filed February 27, 1885. (No model.) Y
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. BoNncUr- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buggy-Tops, of which t-he following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in springs for the back bows of buggy-tops; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of my invention as applied to the back bow of a buggy-top. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view of the spring, partly in section.
Heretofore in the construction of buggytops the weight of the top, when down, has rested entirely upon the bac-k bow thereof, which frequently results in breaking or bending the bow. This defect it is the object of my invention to overcome.
a represents the back bow of a buggy-top, and b the support upon which the back bow usually rests when down. As this support is about midway of the length of the bow, and as the whole weight of the top is borne by the back bow, the back bowin buggies of the common construction becomes broken or bent to an unsightly degree. 4,
c represents a spring, the lower end of which is passed through a loop, d, that is made fast to the rear side of the bow a, near the lower end thereof.
e represents a clamp having the jaws e',
which are tightened on the bow a, near the l upper end thereof, by a bolt, e2. A holder, f, which is made of malleable iron, is secured to the clamp e by a bolt, g, and from the front side of the holder, about midway of its length, projects a support, h, upon which rests the buggy-bow a.
The upper end of thespring is riveted to the holder j', as shown. When the buggy-top is lowered, the spring rests upon the support b, and as the spring is secured to the buggy-top at its upper end, the weight of the buggytop bears upon the spring and the back bow is saved from injury.
I have shown only one of the springs applied to the back bow in Fig. l of the drawings, but it will be understood that one of these springs will be employed on each side of the top and secured to the back bow.
Having thus described my invention, I claimp The combination, with the bacll; bow of a buggy-top, of a clamp secured thereto, the
holder secured to the clamp and having the support h, the spring secured to the holder, and a loop secured to the lower end of the back bow t0 receive thefree end of the spring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WV. BONEOUTTER.
