PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. B. CLAGETT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
REIN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,273, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed September 22, 19Q3.' Serial Nu. 174,226. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. B. CLAGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 331 Maryland avenue northeast, Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to rein-holders; and
the object thereof is to provide a simple, in-
expensive, and highly eiiicient article of this character. Y
To this end the invention includes an attaching member and a holding member formed from a single length of light sheet metal doubled upon itself to provide two clamping-arms, which terminate in outwardly flaring free ends, and a connection between the doubledend of the holding member and the attaching member, whereby the former is firmly supported in a vertical position.
The invention further includes the combination and arrangement of component parts and details of construction to be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
While the invention is susceptible of modication, the accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiment of the same.
In the drawings, Figure l shows the invention in perspective, associated with the dashboard of a vehicle, but a fragment of said board being illustrated. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the article. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is anelevation of a modification.
In the particular exemplification of the attaching member a (shown in the accompanying drawings) the same is embodied in an inverted-U-shaped clip having a straight leg I), serving as one clamping-surface thereof, and a second leg c, having an offset portion providing a guide for a stem d, carrying a second clamping member e, which coacts with the leg b. The clamping member e is preferably formed by a flat disk and between the rear face of the same and the leg c ahelical spring f is interposed, which surrounds the stem d and serves to normally press the member e toward the member b. The edge of the dashboard is received between the two members b c, the upper edge of the former fitting more or less snugly in the upper relatively contracted portion h of the clip, while the member e clamps the same below said edge.
The member a is surmounted by the holding member ,.the latter being supported at its lower end in a vertical position therefrom. The holding member consists, essentially, of a strip of light sheet metal doubled upon itself to provide substantially parallel clampingarms y' 7c, which terminate at their free ends in outwardly-deflected portions, which provide a guide for the rein, as will be readily appreciated.
The attaching member a is intended to firmly engage the dashboard or similar part of the vehicle and provide the sole support for the rein-holding member.
To secure the rein-holding member to the attaching member, in the preferredV construction of my invention a rivet is preferably employed, which extends through the central portion of the doubled end of the former and through the corresponding end of the latter.
In the modification of my invention (shown in Fig. 4) the attaching member is provided by a screw or like device m, which passes through the doubled end of the rein-holding member and is secured in the upper edge of the dashboard or similar part of the vehicle.
The construction and operation of my in- 'vention will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and accompanying drawings, and it will be appreciated that the parts and combinations recited may be varied within a wide range without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A rein-holder, including an attaching mem- Y ber, comprising an inverted substantially U- shaped clip, and a spring-pressed disk guided in one arm thereof which coacts with the other arm, and a rein-holder comprising a single In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in strip of metal haxfing parallel arms with outthe presence of two Witnesses; Wardly-deileoted tree ends, and a fastenlng de- THOMAS F; Ba CLAGETTa Vice extending through the doubled contigu- 5 ous ends of said clip and holder to support Witnesses:
the latter in a vertical position from the top Gno J.- EASTERDAY, of the former, substantially as described. WM. O. DUCKSTIEN.
