1 e. KELLER. WHIP'HOLDER 0R HANGER.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 16, 1906.
JT'fOR-V/iI IS v structed in accordance with my invention,
nrrn sra'rns PATENT orrrc GEORGE KELLER, OF GILMAN, ILLINOIS.
WHIP HOLDER OR HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 16, 1906. Serial No. 326,485.
N0. 842,960. Patented Feb. 5, 1907.
T0 (6Z5 whom it y 00710677711 l and other vehicles and by way of illustration Beit known that I, GEORGE KELLER, a citil is shown applied to a buggy-top of the ordizen of the United States, residing at Gilman, l nary construction, in which 5 designates the in the county of Iroquois and State of Illil buggy-top, 6 the prop-bolt, and 7 the horinois, have invented a new and useful Whip l zontally-disposed braces pivctally connected Holder or Hanger, of which the following is a with the prop-bolt in the usual manner. specification. The holder is preferably formed of a single This invention relates to whip holders or piece of metal, one end of which is provided hangers, and has for its object to provide a I with an opening or perforation 8 for the recomparatively simple and inexpensive deception of the prop-bolt 6, while the opposite vice of this character particularly designed end thereof is formed with a pair of oppofor attachment to a vehicle-top and by means sitely disposed spring clamping arms 9, of which the whip may be suspended by the adapted to engage the walls of the brace 7, as
best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. EX-

ed from the top of the vehicle and main- In operation the head of the bolt 6 is retained in a vertical position by the weight of moved and the holder placed in position on the handle. the shank of the bolt, with the arms 9 embrac- A further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability, and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a whip holder or hanger coning the adjacent brace 7, after which the head of the bolt is replaced, thus locking the holder in position on the buggy-top, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings Attention is called to the fact that the free ends of the fingers 1 l are bent laterally, so as to occupy the space between the brace and the adjacent wall of thebuggy-top 5, thereby permitting the whip to be suspended from the inner side of the brace 7.
In using, the device the lash end of the whip is introduced between the free ends of the fingers 11 and pressed downwardly until the knot 13 bears against the walls of the opening 13, and in which position the whip will be supported from the buggy-top and maintained in a straight position by the weight of the lower end of the handle of said whip. In order to remove the whip, it is merely necessary to exert a slight upward movement on the lash end of the latter when the whip -may be quickly removed, as will be readily understood.
While the holder is especially designed for use in connection with-buggies and similar vehicles, it is obvious that the same may be used for displaying whips in stores or used showing the same in position on a bug y-top. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view ta en on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is formed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures ofi the drawings.
The improved holder is principally, 'designedpfor attachmentito carriages, wagons,
sirable.
wherever a device of this kind is found de From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a vehicle-top having a prop-bolt and brace,oi' a holder having clampingnrms embracing the brace and provided with leterally-extending fingers adapted to engage the lash end of a whip, said holder being locked in position on the vehicle-top by engagement with the crop- 2. The combination with a vehicle-top having a prop-bolt and brace, of a holder secured to the prop-bolt and provided with oppositely-disposed arms adapted to engage l l l 1 the brace, said holder being provided with a clamping member adapted to receive the lash end of a whip.
3. A holder formed of a single piece of metal having one end thereof provided with an opening and its opposite end formed with clamping-arms, one end of the plate being provided with laterally-extendingfingers the adjacent edges of which are spaced apart and inclined or beveled for engagement with the lash end of a whip.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have l eto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE KELLER.
