Description

A. SiLVER. SAFETY BRIDGE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30,1915.
- Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
Mi. fawn? 'lll llTD @TATES PATENT @FFTQE.
ALBERT SILVER, OF ELLIS, KANSAS.
SAFETY-BRIDGE.
Application filed June so, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT SILVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ellis, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Bridges, of which the following is a specification, reference. being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a safety bridge for stopk cars,'and has for its principal object the production of a bridge which is adapted to span the space between the floorstock car.
Another object of this invention is the I production of a bracket having a chain secured thereto, this bracketbeing adapted to be secured to a safety bridge for stock cars, wherein the chain may be adjusted according to the length desired and retained in a perspective view of the bracket. Fig. 5 is a. I
set position so as to retain the bridge at a desired height.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinaftenfully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a safety bridge having the retaining elements secured thereto, and illustrating the manner in which the sameis used. Fig. 2 is a sectional VleW through a safety bridge showing the retaining means in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the retaining means showing the same mounted upon a portion of the safety bridge. Fig. l is a detailed longitudinal sectional view through the bracket, showing the same mounted upon a portion of the safety bridge.
Referring tothe accompanying drawing by numerals it will be seen that the StOCK car Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1916.
Serial No. 37,399.
1 is provided with the usual bottom 2 having the door frame 3. The safety bridge 1 p is elongated so as to have its end portions extending for a distance beyond the side portions of thc'door frame 3, as clearly shown in Fig. l. edge and at each end of the safety bridge 1 there is formed a notch 5, which is adapted to fit around one side portion of the door frame 3, whereby the inward movement of the bridge into the car will be limited, while a portion of the bridge will rest upon the floor 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The bracket 6 comprises an elongated body having the apertures 7 formed therein so as to allow the screws 8 or other securing means to be passed therethrough for fixedly retaining the bracket 6 in a desired position upon the safety bridge 4. 1 The body of this bracket 6 is provided with the upwardly extending lip 9 at one end, having the l! shaped notch 10 formed therein, so as to provide the claws 11. These claws extend slightly rearwardly, as shown clearly in Figs. 2- and 5, for purposes to be hereinafter set forth. The opposite end of thebody of the bracket 6 has a coiled tongue 12 formed thereon, to which the ring 13 is secured. A chain 14 is carried by this ring and is pro vided at its opposite end with the hook 15. It should, of course, be noted by referring particularly to Fig. 1, that the bracket 6 and chain 14 as above set forth are adapted to be carried adjacent each end of the bridge 4. v
l Vhen this device is in use it may be lifted by means of the handle 16 which is secured thereto in any suitable manner, so as to have the notched portions 5 adjacent the end thereof engage the door frame 3. The hook 15 may then be passed around the door frame, as clearly shownin Figs. 1 and 2, at which time the chain may be drawn tautly so as to be passed down into the notch 10 and thus carried by the claws 11. Since these claws extend slightly rearwardly they will positively prevent the chain from slipping and will hold the same so as to retain the safety bridge in a. desired set position as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The slacking portion of the chain may be drawn to one side so as not to interfere with the'operation of this invention, but when it is necessary the entire chain may be used so as to allow the safety bridge 'to be swung downwardly as far as desired. It will be Adjacent the rear side seen however, that the chain may be positively retained for carrying the safety bridge in a desired position by means of the claws between which it is necessary for the bridge to pass Therefore, it will be seen that a very simple and eiiicient bracket and chain have been provided for holding the bridge in a desired set position according to the height at which the bridge must be retained.
What is claimed is: 1. In a safety bridge for stock ears the combination of a bracket comprising an elongated body, said body being adapted to be carried upon a safety bridge, a lip formed upon said bracket and extending upwardly and slightly rearwardly therethrough, said lip provided with a V-shaped notch thereby forming a pair of claws, a chain secured to said bracket and provided with a hook, said hook being adapted to engage a door frame of a stock car at which time said chain may be drawn tautly and passed into said notch of said lip so as to be engaged by said claws, whereby said chain will be held at a desired length so as to retain a safety bridge in a bridge, said body having a coiled tongue formed upon one side thereof, a ring carried by said tongue, a chain carried by sald ring.
and provided with a hook, said body provided with a laterally extending lip" at its opposite end, said lip extending upwardly and slightly rearwardly, said l-ip provided with a V-shaped notch thereby forming claws, said hook being adapted to engage the door frame of a stock car, at which time a portion of the chain may be drawn tautly and passed between said claws, whereby said claws will positively engage the chain for holding the same from slipping, and thereby retaining a safety bridge in a desired set position. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
ALBERT SILVER.
