UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. ANDERSON, OF ADA, MINNESOTA.
CHECKRElN-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,430, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed June 5, 1897. Serial No. 639,531. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. ANDERSON, a.
citizen of the United States of America, re-.
siding at Ada, in the county of Norman and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein- Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is the provision of novel means for preventing the disengagement of the checkrein of harness from the hook; and to that end the invention consists of an attachment for said hook which will effectually accomplish such result.
A further object of the invention is to produce a checkrein-hook which will prove strong, durable, and efficient, making it at the same time comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain, since the parts are so arranged as to be readily removable to renew worn or broken parts.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of con struction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals denotecorresponding parts in both views, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a hook with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation looking at the rear edge.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the hook, which at its upper end is provided with a longitudinal recess 2, in which the keeper 3 lies. The flanges 4, formed by the recess, prevent any lateral movement of the keeper. The keeper consists of an arm pivoted in a recess 5, formed on the lower section of the hook, and a screw 6 serves to retain the arm in position.
engagement with the upper end of the hook should the arm be'removed or broken, and in such event would serve as a retainer for holding the checkrein in the hook. This would prove desirable in the event of any accident to the arm.
By the construction illustrated it will be seen that a ready engagement and disengagement of the checkrein may be had by the use of one hand, it being unnecessary to operate the arm except by a pressure of the rein between the hook and arm when placing the rein and by a pressure near the lower end of the arm to effect a disengagement.
The operation and advantages will be ap parent from the foregoing description, and it will be noted that various changes in the proportions may be resorted to and yet the spirit of my invention will not be departed from.
. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, a base having'a threaded shank, upper and lower recessed extensions extending from the base,an arm having a way formed on its surface, said arm being pivoted in the recess of the lower extension and lying in the recess of the upper extension and a spring secured in the base and extending up and lying in the recess of the arm and adapted to lie in the recess of the upper extension upon the removal of the arm, as and for the purpose described.
;In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
