Be it known that I, JOHN H. HUNTRESS, of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Vhip and Rein Holder; and' I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to au improvement in` combined whip and rein holders, the object ot' niy'invention being, first, to provide a whip and rein holder which will hold the whip firmly in position in the socket, and which will not damage the whip by abrasion while being introduced or withdrawn from the socket; second, to provide a whip and rein holder which lwill hold the reins securely, and which will allow the reins to be gripped and released without the removal of the whip, or the whip to be gripped and released without removal of the reins and, thirdly, to provide a whip and rein holder which can be readily and firmly adjusted to any dash, can be operated by the durable. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a front view in perspective, with whip` and reins in position; and Fig. 2 is a rear view in perspective of the socket, showing the fastenings.

A represents a skeleton whip-socket made of any suitable material, having the aperture B, which admits the clamping end of the lever O. The socket A is further provided with the lugs d d, which support the pivoted lever C, and also with the cup-recess b, which holds one end of the spiral spring E. The lever C, made of any suitable material, is provided with the cup-recess b', to hold the other end of the spring E, and with the flattened end F, to receive the pressure from. the foot or hand.' The spiral spring E, pressing outward, holds" the clamping end of the leverfirmly against the whip. The clainping'end D of the lever is made sufficiently large to prevent it from passing entirely through the aperture B when the whip is removed.- The socket is fastened to the dash by means of the at U-shaped spring-fastenings a a. The shorter ends of these fastenings e e are riveted to the back of the socket, which is conveniently made somewhat thicker, and attened at these places to receive them, and the longer ends f f are provided with holes 7L h, to admit screws g g, which are received into` correspondingly-threaded holes L h in the back of the socket.

I have spoken of the socket as skeleton,77 this being lighter, and saving material; but I do not wish to confine myself to that particular form, but retain the privilege of legitimately modifying the shape of either socket or lever.

The face of the clamping end of the lever may well be provided with a rubber or other soft packing.

I am aware that the combination of a whip and rein holder is not new, and therefore disclaim the same, broadly.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with a whip-socket having an aperture. B, of the lever pivoted to the said socket, and a spring for forcing one end of the lever through the aperture in the socket, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a whipsocket having an aperture, B, and a lug or lugs, of a lever pivoted to the lugs and provided with a curved upper end, and a spring for forcing the curved upper end of the lever through the aperture, substantially as set forth.
