' 's BsoILnn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that :we, JAMES and James A. GRAHAM, citizens of {the United States, residing; at Thompsonville, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Subsoilers,of which the followingis a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in subsoilers and the object of the invention is to provide 'a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be operatively connected with the beam of a plow proper with convenience and facility. and in such a manner whereby the depth of penetration of the subsoiler may be readily regulated, as the necessities of. practice may require.
The invention consists in the, details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved subsoiler whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and othelfi.
wise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a plow showing a subsoiler constructed in accordance with an embodiment'ot our invention in applied position thereon; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1'; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line e 3 of Fig.1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a plow beam as generally employed in connection with a walking 4 or sulky plow and, as hereindisclosed, is sub stantially I-shaped in cross section and has its rear extremity bent or curved downwardly, as at 2, and to which depending portion is adapted to be secured, n the usual way, the conventional plow 3. I
At a predetermined point along the substantially horizontal portion of the beam 1 and to one side thereof is positioned the Application fi ecinarcirii; 1914., Serial No. 924, 12."

block member l-having the recess .or,-.p'ocl et ,5, such block being :clamped to thebea n 1 through the medium of the clamping bolts 6 passingabove and below the beam lwhreby it will be readily. perceived that such beam is inno wise weakenedas would be the case ifsuch bolts were directed through suitable openings in the beam, as is gen- The clamping bolts .or mem- Z bers (Til/1S0 serve to holdinoperative-post tion against the opposite side of the beam 1, the depending member/4- formed on the forward extremity of the elongated member 8 whiclnserves as a brace for the raclrme1n her 9, the length of the member Sbeing such as to permit the lower'angular portion 10 of the rackto be clamped tothe beam 1 at the bend thereof, such portion 10 being pro vided with suitable openings through which conventional hoolcbolts areprojected in order to create the requisite clamping action,
ina manner which isbelievedto be obvious.
Within the pocket or recess is suitably pivoted, as indicated at 11, the torwardea ,trem ty of the subsoiler beam 12 which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction and terminating in a proper position relative to the plow To either side of the rack 9 the beam 12 is provided with the upstanding straps l l, to the upper extremities 01. which are suitably secured the bar 1-5, the rear" portion of such bar 15 being extended, as indicated at 16, in order to afford a convenient hand grasp. Slidably mounted u )on the bar 15 is the spring actuated-pawl 1r normally in engagement with the rack 9 but adapted to be disengaged therefrom through the medium of the lever 18 pivotally connected with the bar 15 andoverlyso a ing the projected or handle portion 16, such- 1 lever being operatively connected with the pawl 17 through the medium of the link member 19.
When it is desired to regulate or adjust I the extent of penetration of the plow member 20 carried upon the lower extremity of the subsoiler beam 12, 1t is only necessary that such beam be swung upon its pivotal connection, with the block 1, through the medium of thebar 15, in a manner which is believed to be self-evident.
In order that the beam 12 will be efiect- ,ively maintained against undue lateral movement, wefind it of advantage to have principles and spirit thereof and for this.
structed in accordance with our invention is r of anextremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adaptedfor use by reason ofthe c0nvenlence and faclhty with which it may be assembled and by reason of the eiieetivenesswith which it performs its several functions and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the reason we do not wish to be understood as i limiting ourselves to the precise arrange- 2O merit and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice.
Having thus fully described our invention what we desire to claim and secure by Let ters Patent, is: I 1 g In combination with a plow beam, a block positioned to'one side of the beam and provided with an opening disposed substantially parallel to the beam, an elongated member positioned above the beam and provided at one extremity with a depending member "overlying the beam at the side there of opposite to the block, clamping 1neans common to the block and the depending member for holding the same to the beam, a
. rack depending from the opposite extremity of the elongated' member and overlying the ing within the opening of the block and pivotally engaged therewith and of a length to project immune-y of the rack, a bar positioned above and carried by the subsoiler beam and provided with an extensionto afford a hand grasp, a latch mechanism oarried by thebar and enacting with the rack whereby the subsoiler beam may be main ta i ned in differing adjustments about its pivoted connection with the block, said latch including a member overlying the projected portion of the bar-whereby the latch may be operated by the hand in engagement with the projected portion, the clamping means for the block and depending member and the clamping means forthe rack constituting the only point ofengagement with the plow beam.
In testimonywhereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
