W. T. LEGATES.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
No. 389,396. Patented Sept. 11, 1888.
qwitvbeoozo gm r 1% 61K- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
WILLIAM T. LEGATES, OF FEDERALSBURG, MARYLAND.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
sPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,396, dated September 11, 1888.
Application filed May 5, 1888.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. LEGATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Federalsburg, in the county of Caroline and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vhiifletree-Hooks, of which the following is a Specification.
The invention relates to improvements in whiifletree-hooks such as are adapted to conmeet a singletree or doubletree to the clevis of a plowbeam; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side elevation of a whiltletreehook embodying the invention and connecting a singletree and plow-beam. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the hook detached with the latch-arm thrown back.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a plow beam, B the elevis attached thereto, and b the clevis-ring.
O is a singletrce having the traces attached to its ends and provided with the pivotal clip 0, which passes through the eye of the whiffletree-hook D. The said hook has the opposite earsE E depending from a point below its eye and the ears e 6 depending from its point and forming between them the seat 6' for the arm Serial No. 272,934. (No model.)
F, the butt F of which is pivoted between the ears E. The said butt is generally rectangular, and is provided with the angular cornersff, between which is the tlat edgef, nearly parallel with the arm, and the rounded corner f between its lower edge and end.
G is a strong spring secured at one end to the inner surface of the shank of the hook and with its free end bearing upon the butt F of the arm F. When the said arm is closed, the spring presses upon the flat edgef on the opposite side of the pivotal point and retains it closed, and when the arm is turned off or open the spring presses upon its lower surface turned upward and keeps it extended. The arm, when closed, will keep the clevis-ring b, which engag s the hook, from being accidentally detached. The seat 0 is preferably made curved, and the convex upper surface of the arm F fils snugly therein.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A whiffietree-hook having the ears e 6 depending from the under side of its point, forming the seat 6 between them, an arm pivoted near the eye of the hook and resting in the seat between the ears 6 e, and a spring secured to the inner surface of the shank of the hook and bearing on the butt of said arm to hold the same either open or closed, as set forth.
2. A whiffletree hook provided with opposite ears standing outward from its eye, an arm having its heel pivoted between said ears and closing the space between the eye and point of the hook, and a spring having its fixed end secured to the inner surface of the shank of the hook and its free end pressing on the butt of the arm to retain the same either open or closed, substantially as specified.
3. The herein described whittletreehook having the eye (Z, the ears E E standing from the eye, the concave seat e on its point, the arm Ehaving the rectangular butt F,provided with the angular cornersff, the rounded cornersf, and the straight flat edge f, and the spring G, secured to the shank of the hook and bearing on the butt of the said arm, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM T. LEGATES.
