Description

C. L. BURNS.
CLEVIS. 7 APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, I916.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917 nnirnn sra'rns PATENT orrrcn CHARLES I. BURNS, OF ALTAMONT, MISSOURI.
CLEVIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residinmat Altamont, in the county of Daviess, tate of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clevises and has special reference to a clevis which is adaptable for connection to either thin or thick doubletrees.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved and simplified form of clevis which can be attached to different thicknesses of doubletree in such manner that it will closely engage the same whether they be thin or thick and will prevent the rattling and wearing incident to the use of too large a clevis on a doubletree.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal median section through the device.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is provided a link having a side 10 and a rounded end 11 for the connec tion of the trace chain or the like. The front end of this link comprises a bar 12 which is circular in cross section and is provided with a series of openings 13 arranged at angles to each other for purposes to be hereinafter set forth.
The side of the link opposite the side 10 is open but the part adjacent the end 11 is provided with a rearward portion 14. The end Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Ria 13, 1917, Application filed July 25, 1916.
Serial No. 111,322.
of this'portion 14 is provided with an eye 15 and extending through this eye is a pivot pin 16 which also extends through eyes 17 formed on a closure plate 18. This closure plate is provided at its free end with a slot 19 which engages the end 12 of the link. On the closure plate 18 are also provided spaced ears 20 in which is slidably mounted a bolt 21. This bolt 21 projects across the opening 19 and can enter any one of the openings 13, the openings being angles for the purpose of permitting the entry of the bolt 21 at different positions of the closure plate 18 about its pivot.
Extending laterally from the bolt 21 is a finger piece 22 which may be turned up perpendicular to the plate 18 or allowed to lie parallel to this plate. Between this finger piece 22 and the ear 20 which is near the pivot there is provided a coil spring 23, one end of which bears against the finger piece 22 while the other end bears against said ear 20.
By means of this arrangement the end 12 may be placed through the doubletree and the plate 18 adjusted and locked in adjusted position so that the front end of the clevis will closely fit the doubletree, no matter whether it be a thick doubletree or a thin one.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A clevis adaptable for connection to donbletrees comprising a link having one side open, the open side of said link having a rear portion provided at its forward extremity with an eye, the forward end of the link comprising a bar having a spaced series ofopenings therein, a closure having hinge eyes at one end and a slot at the other end engaging the forward end of the link, a other end against the ear nearer the pivot pivot pin passing through the eyes, spaced pin. 10 ears on said closure, a bolt slidable in said In testimony-whereof, I affix my signature, ears and engage-able in the openings in the in the presence of two Witnesses.
forward end of the link, a finger piece pro- CHARLES L. BURNS. jecting from the bolt between the ears, and a \Vitnesses:
spring surrounding the bolt and bearing at EDWARD G. URBAN,
one end against the finger piece and at its L. L. HARMAN.
