Description
. UNITED STATES VIRAM B. PAUL, OF MERRILL, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOKS FOR DRAFT-CHAINS, WHIFFLETREES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,224, dated September l0, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Hooks, invented by VIRAM B. PAUL, of Merrill, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine.
\ This invention relates to the construction of iron or metallic hooks, to be used for various purposes; and consists mainly in a plate or shield of heart form, in which the point of the hook terminates the construction, being as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, showing the form of the shield and its arrangement. Fig. 2 is a side View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the hook. B is the eye. C is the neck. D is a shoulder at the end of the neck, from which point the hook curves in nearly a circle to the plate or shield E. The plate is placed on the hook, as seen in Fig. l, with its sides parallel with the neck, and with its point extending past the shoulder D, as seen in Fig. 2. F F are shoulders formed by the shield on each side of the hook. When the hook is inserted into a link or a slot-hole,
whether on the end of a chain or draft trace, or in any other situa-tion, the shield and the shoulder D prevent the hook from becoming displaced or detached. When the draft-chain of a plow is attached with my improved hook the connection is safe; and the same is theresult in whiletree connections-no turning or backing can disconnect it. `Oxen and horses are much less liable to be injured by it than by the ordinary sharppointed hook.
I do not conne myself to any particular size of hook or plate, nor to the precise form of the plate, as variations may be made to adapt to various uses without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- s A hook, constructed with a plate or shield, E, with shoulders F F, and shoulder D, substantially as shown and described.
VIRAM B. PAUL.
