To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABNER FRAIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Halter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to horse halters and more particularlyto an improved form of buckle for use in connection with a divided nose strap, one of the objects being to provide a buckle which can be used to quickly connect or disconnect the ends of the strap, said buckle being so shaped as to lie comfortably upon the horse.

With the above and other objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel halter hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a horses head, showing thereon the halter of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the buckle used in connection with the halter and also portions of the nose strap, the locked position of the buckle being shown. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the buckle and portions of the nose strap.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A designates the nose strap, B the neck strap held positioned by a buckle C, and one of the side straps of an ordinary halter, and as these parts, as well as those of the bridle designated generally E, may be of the usual or any preferred construction, detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary. The terminals of the nose strap are adapted to be detachably connected by means of a buckle of improved form.

The buckle comprises two members that are permanently attached to the terminals of the nose strap B, in any preferred manner. One of the members embodies a bail 1 the terminals of which are passed through orifices arranged adjacent to each end of a bar 2, and are coiled one or more times around the same as at 3, thus to insure a stable connection between the parts, the passage of the terminals through the bar serving effectively not only to prevent disconnection between the parts, but also positively to preclude any lateral movement of the side members of the bail. The bar extends at each end some distance beyond the coils 3 and these projecting ends are adapted to be loosely engaged by eyes 4 formed on the terminals of two

5 and 6 of a second bail designated generally 7. The arm 5 is provided adjacent to the eye 4 with a loop 8 that is designed to be engaged by a loop 9 formed at one end of a keeper 10, the other end of which is provided with a similar loop 11 that engages with the arm 6. This latter arm is provided with a relatively deep depression 12 and a relatively shallow depression 13, the latter of which operates to retain the

5 and 6 in locked position relative to the bar 2, and the former of which, when the keeper is moved out of looking position, to permit the eyes 4: to pass out of engagement with the terminals of the bar 2, thus disconnecting the two ends of the nose strap. By this arrangement it will be seen that the employment of an ordinary buckle is dispensed with, thereby avoiding the necessity of providing one of the nose strap terminals with a series of orifices, as usual, to be engaged by the buckle in order to secure the proper attachment of the halter. Moreover, this buckle will be found strong, durable, and cannot accidentally become unfastened.

To position the halter upon a horses head without removing the bridle, it will only be necessary to secure the neck strap in position in the usual manner, and then to pass the ends of the nose strap between the bridle and the animals face, and then secure the buckle members together.

The improvements herein described, while simple in character, will be found thoroughly eflicient for the purpose designed, and will in a ready and practical manner, eliminate the objections inherent with the use of all halters now on the market.

I claim:

A buckle for halters and the like including a bail, a bar secured to the bail and projecting at its ends beyond the same, a second bail provided with eyes to engage with the ends of the bar, one member of the bail being provided with a loop and the other member with two depressions of different my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
