PLOW-CLEVIS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,603, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed November 22, 1889. Serial No. 331,171. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IN NES T, MOINTYRE, of Carrollton, in the county of Carroll, State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Plow-Clevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in plow-clevises; and it consists in the peculiar construction of devices that will be more fully set fortl1,a11d particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a clevis which is adapted to permit the Whitfietree to be attached to or detached from the plow, or to be adjusted thereon with great facility and in a very short space of time 5 and a further object of my invention is to provide a clevis which is cheap and simple in construction, is very strong and durable, and is designed to prevent splitting the plowbeam when under unusual side strain.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the clevis embodying my improvements, showing the same attached to the plow-beam. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, the parts of the clevis be ing detached and arranged in position for the attachment, detachment, or adjustment of the whiffletree.
On the upper and lower sides of the plowbeam, at the front end thereof, are arranged longitudinal draw-bars A B, which are made of iron and are secured in place by bolts 0, which extend through openings in the plowbeam and in the draw-irons. The latter have their front ends, which project, bifurcated or forked to form pairs of cars D, and vertical openings F, which are aligned with each other, are made in the said. ears.
The clevis G is made substantially in the form of the letter E, having the upper and lower arms II I adapted to be inserted between the pairs of cars D, and having the short arm K arranged midway between the upper and lower arms, The front portions of the clevis between the arms are curved to form the eyes L M The wrench N has the plain shank O, which forms the pivot-bolt and is adapted to pass through the openings in the ears and through openings in the arms II I, in order to secure the clevis to the'front ends of the draw-irons, and to adapt the clevis to be swung laterally-thereon. In the lower end of the wrench shank is an opening R, through which a limbpin may be passed to retain the wrench in position. The central arm K, which extends nearly to the wrench-shank, serves to retain the eye of the whiflietree at the desired adjustment and in engagement with either of the eyes L M, as will be readily understood.
In order to attach the whililetree to the plow, it is only necessary to withdraw the boltwrench, and thereby release the clevis, engage the latter with the eye or link of the whiflietree, and then reinsert the arms of the clevis between the pairs of cars and restore the wrench or bolt to the position before described.
The cars of the draft-irons, by forming four bearings for the wrench-bolt, serve effectually to brace and stiffen the latter and pre vent it from being forced out of shape or bent by the strain on the clevis, and hence the wrench-bolt is kept straight and maybe very readily withdrawi'rfrom or reinstated in the clevis when detaching or adjusting the whiffletree. By pivoting the clevis on the wrenchbolt, as before described, the clevis is adapted to swing laterally with the movements of the team, and hence has no tendency to split the end of the plow-beam, as is the ease with the elevises now in common use Having thus described my invention, I ClLlX1l" 1, The combination of the draftirons attached to the plow-beam, the clevis G, and the bolt engaging openings in the draft-irons and clevis, and thereby pivoting the latter,
the said clevis having the arm K extending nearly to the bolt, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described 2.
