Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEFICE.
'LEVIS II. 'EBB, OF SOUTH QUAY, VIRG-INI.
IMPROVEMENT IN- WHIFFLETREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,084, dated February 3, 1874 application liled October 4, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs H. WEEE, of South Quay, in the county of Nansemond and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved vhiffletree, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will irst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a plan view of a whitlletree with appliances arranged according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y.
Similar letters of A reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the whiflietree; B, the truss-rod, C, the
strut; and D, the metal caps on the ends of the whiietree. I make a crotch in the end of the strut against which the truss-rod bears, and tit a ring, E, in the angle formed by the trees and the branches of the strut, for attaching to the clcvis F, said ring being to sustain the wear of the clevis, and being arranged so that it can be shifted around in its place at any time to turn the worn place away from the clevis, and present another unworn place. Said ring has a groove in its periphery, in which the trussrrod and the branches of the strut bear to hold it in place. I arrange the ends of the truss-rod to pass through the caps l) at the ends of the whiitletree, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3, to receive the couplings G, and to hold said caps securely against becoming detached, and I screw on the couplings G, so that they serve for the nuts for fastening the truss-rod to the whifii etree; also, so that they can be readily taken ofi' when worn and new ones can be put on.
For connecting the traces to the couplings, I propose to employ a kind of double hook or ring of two parts, II and I, so contrived that when separately hooked into the coupling and then placed together, they form a complete ring, in which another ring, say, a ring, M, in the trace, can be engaged by separating the parts a little without removing them from the coupling, and hooking the trace-ring first in one and then in the other, and at the same time it is equally as well adapted for the c0n nection of a toggle-pin, N, or any ordinary hook as a solid ring, thus allowing harness with any of the ordinary bitching attachments to be used.
This is very desirable on large farms, or other works, where the wagons, plows, and othes implements are indiscriminately used with different teams and harness.
This whiffletree is preferable to others on account oi' always being right-side up, no 1natter .which is. the uppermost side. Thereas others must be arranged with one particular side up, which often makes unnecessary labor and delay for chan ging it when attached wrong side up.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rIhe combination ot' rotary Clovis-ring E with the strut O andtruss B ot' a whiflietree,
as and for the purpose described.
2. rIhe combination of end-threaded trussrod B, with caps l) and couplings G, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The two-part coupling II I, constructed as and for the purpose described.
