WHIFFLETREE.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS F. CODY, a citizen 0f the United States, residing at Hawley, in the county of Hyde and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in W'hifietrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to whiiiietrees specially adapted for heavy hauling; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a whiiietree constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
A tubular metallic bar 2 is provided, and is provided with pins 3 which pass vertically through holes in its end portions. Draft attachments 4, such as clevises or hooks, are pivoted to the pins 3, and straddle the bar 2. Two bails 5 inclined in opposite directions are also pivoted to the pins 3, and are arranged at the rear side of the bar 2 at an inclination to its axis. A connecting-piece 6 is pivoted to the loops of the two hails at the middle part of and in rear of the bar 2, and bears against the middle Specification of Letters Patent.

part of the bar. This connecting-piece is preferably a triangular or stirrup-shaped link, but any other approved form of connecting-piece may be used. The animals are connected to the draft attachments 4, and the load is attached to the connecting piece 6.
This whiftletree is made of various sizes, and when of large size it may be used as a doubletree to connect two whiiiletrees of smaller size; or any number of similar whiffletrees of various sizes may be connected together to form a draft equalizer for any desired number of animals.
What I claim is:
In a whitiietree, the combination, with a bar, of pivot pins passing vertically and crosswise through the end portions of the bar, two bails having eyes at their ends which are pivoted on the upper and lower projecting end portions of the said pins, draft attachments also pivoted on the said pins, and a horizontally arranged link connecting the looped portions of the said bails and bearing against the middle part of the said bar.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS F. CODY.
