UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL FORTER, OF MARYSVILLE, KANSAS.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,652, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed August 18, 1887. Serial No. 247,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FORTER, of Marysville, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented a new and 1111- proved Thill-Goupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved thill-coupling, by which the shafts or tongues are securely coupled to the axle of the wagon.
The invention consists of a bolt passing through the apertured ears of the clip and through the shaft end, said bolt being provided on one end with an extension on which is formed a bar extending parallel with the bolt, and provided on its outer end with a curved angular arm adapted to engage the outer face of one of the ears of the clip.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,- in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bolt.
On the axle A of the wagon is secured, in any suitable manner, the clip B, of any approved construction, and provided with the apertured ears 0 and 0, between which is held the apertured end of the shaft or tongue D. Through the apertures in the ears 0 and O and through the end of the shaft passes a bolt, E, slightly pointed at one end and pro vided at its other end with an extension, F, having an aperture, F, and continuing to form the bar G, extending parallel with the bolt E and usually resting on the tops of the ears 0 and G. On the outer end of the bar G is formed an angular and curved arm, H, fitting tightly over the outer face of the ear 0 of the clip B. When the shaft or tongue D is coupled to the clip B by the bolt E, as shown in Figs.
(No model.)
1 and 2, then the bar G extends across the tops of the ears 0 and O, and the curved arm H extends downward and engages the outer face of the ear 0 very tightly, so that the bolt E is prevented from dropping out of the apertured end ofthe tongue or shaft D and out of the apertured ears 0 and G.
If it is desirable to uncouple the shaft or tongue D from the clip B, the operator turns the bolt E by inserting a nail or pin into the aperture F of the extension F, and then turning the same until the bolt E, the bar G, and the arm H assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2'that is, the arm H is disengaged from the ear 0 and extends above the top of said car, so that the bolt E can now be easily withdrawn from the ears 0 and G and the end of the shaft D. This operation can be performed only when the shaft D is in its lowest position; and when the shaft is in position as shown in Fig. 2 the bolt E cannot be turned sufficiently to disengage the curved arm H from the ear 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina thill-coupling, the combination, with a clip having apertured ears, of a bolt provided with a rigid arm extending parallel therewith and nearly to the end thereof, and having its free end bent to form an angular and curved arm fitting tightly over the outer face of one of the ears of the clip, in rear of the aperture of said clip, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a thill-coupling bolt consisting of the bolt E, provided with the extension F, the rigid arm G, extending from said extension parallel with the bolt and nearly to the end thereof, and having its free end bent to form the angular and curved arm H, as set forth.
SAMUEL FORTER.
