EBHILO I-I. BOICE, OF FRANKLINVILLE, NEW YORK.
otEvIs FOR WHIFFLETREES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6,1914.
Application filed March at, 1913. 'seriai No. 757,019.
Franklinville, in the county of Cattarau-g-us K and State of New York, have invented 'cer= tain new and useful Improvements in Clevises for WVhifHetrees, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clevises for whiffletrees, theobject of the invention being to provide a center clevis for whiflietrees, either single or double, which at all times will give free play thereto, thus preventing the twisting of clevises and splitting and breaking of the wood.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which will possess advantages in point-s of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clevis constructed in accordance with my inven tion; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a whiflietree, to the rear side of which is secured a bracket 2, said bracket being semicircular in form and provided with a longitudinal recess 8 which communicates with a semicircular recess 4 formed in the rear of the bracket. The bracket it rigidly secured to the whifiletree by means of the bolts 5, said bolts being arranged within the recess 3 and passing through the rear of the bracket to the whiffletree. It will be understood that any other suitable form of fastening means may be used, if desired.
Arranged within the recess 3 and having its ends mounted in the bracket is a pin 6, upon which is mounted a roller 7. A connecting link 8 is provided, said link being mounted upon the roller 7 at one end thereof and the other end being provided with a sleeve 9 which connects the side portions of the link. Mounted within the sleeve 9 is the reduced shank portion 10 of the hook member 11. Removably secured to the end 'of the shank portion 10 is a head 12, which is adapted to be arranged between the side portions of the link 3 to securely hold the shank portion 10 within the sleeve 9 whereby the hook member will be securely fastened to the bracket 2.
The member 11 is provided with the oppositely disposed hooks 13 and 14, the hook 13 being spaced farther from the body portion of the member 11 than the hook 14. It will be understood that the hook 13 is to be used upon a plow or other implement wherein a cross bolt or similar means is used, which is adapted to be engaged by the hook. The hook 14 is adapted to be engaged by means of a chain or similar article to the plow or other implement. It will be understood that in using the chain for engaging the hook 14, one of the links of the chain will be engaged between the hook and the body of the member 11, thus preventing sliding movement of the chain.
It will be readily apparent from the foregoing construction that the whiflietree will have free movement and will be allowed to swing in any direction, thus relieving the various parts from any strain. It will also be apparent that by having the clevis secured to the whiffietree, the whiffletrees may be quickly and readily attached to a plow or other similar implement and when attached to a wagon, sleigh or other similar vehicle, the hook member 11 may be swung to one side and arranged in parallel relation with the whiffletree so as to be entirely out of the way. It will be apparent that by having the device secured to the w'hiffletree, the person driving the draft animals will not have to bother about hunting a clevis or other device to secure the whiflietrees to the implement they desire to use. It will be readily apparent that the device in itself is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost. It will also be apparent that the device-may be quickly and readily applied to a whifiletree or easily removed therefrom.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features'or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is The combination with a Whiffletree, of a bracket secured thereto, said'bracket being provided with a longitudinal recess, a pin projecting across said recess, a roller mounted upon said pin, a link member having one end disposed Within said recess and movably mounted upon said roller, a sleeve formed at the other end of said link member, a hook member having one end rotatably mounted Within said sleeve, a removable head secured to the inner end of the hook member and arranged between the side portions of the link, and oppositely disposed hooks formed at the outer end of the hook member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
