DRAFT EQUALIZER. No. 261,355. Patented Ju1y18, 1882L ATTORNEYS.
N. PETERS. PhnluLithngnpiwr, Wushi C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH O. JONES, OF WHITT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALEXANDER W. ROBERTSON, OF DENTON COUNTY, TEXAS.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPEGIFIGATIONYfOrming part of Letters Patent No. 261,355, dated July 18, 1882.
Application filed February 13, 1582. (No'modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH O. J oNEs, ot' Whitt, Parker county, Texas, have invented a new and Improved Double-Tree, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a double-tree adapted to be used without singletrees, and one which will equalize the draft in case one horse gets ahead of the other.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved double-tree. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on theline a: roof Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detailed elevation of the front edge of the double-tree.
A represents the double-tree,which is formed with the mortise b in the center, and is provided at its ends with the hooks a (1. Upon each side of the mortise the double-tree is provided with the eyebolts c c, in which the ends of the bail B are linked. In the mortise b is placed the guttered pulley D, which is held in place by the pin or bolt f, which passes through the double-tree and through the center of the pulley. Upon the pulley is placed the chain H, which is provided with the hooks d d, to which the inside trace-chains of the harness are to be hooked. The bail B is formed in the center with the eye h, in which the clcvis is to be placed when the team is to be attached to any object not having a tongue. When the team is to be attached to any machine, vehicle, or conveyance having a tongue, the bail B will not be used, but the pin or bolt f will be removed, and the ordinary bolt of the tongue will be passed through the hammer-strap and through the double-tree, pulley, and tongue.
By this construction it will be seen that the action of the chain His such as to equalize the draft in case one horse is in advance of the other. When the pin or boltfis not used it may be placed through the hole *5 in' the doubletree, where it will be carried, so as to be always handy when needed for use.
The chain H is by preference held in place in the guttered wheel by the pin or bolt h,
which passesthrough the wheel near its edge, as shown clearlyin Figs. 1 and 2; but, instead of using this bolt, the chain may be held by a suitable rivet passed through a link of the chain and into the periphery of the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the double-tree A, provided with the hooks a at its ends, and the bail B, secured to its rear part, of the grooved pulley D, pivoted in a mortise at the center of the length of said double-tree, and the chain H, provided with hooks (1 at its ends, and seoured at the center of its length in the grooves of the pulley, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JEREMIAH O. JONES. Witnesses:
