Patented Feb. 10, 1885.
WITNESSES:
edjw wffi ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JOHN SCOTT AND AMOS S. SCOTT, OF CALN TOWVNSHIP, CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,021, dated February 10,1885.
Application filed October 25, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN SCOTT and AMOS S. SCOTT, both of Caln township, in the county of- Chester and State of Pennsylvania,'l1ave in vented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle-Shafts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in vehicle- IO shaits, whereby three horses can be hitched on the shafts usually arranged for one horse.
The invention consists in the combination, with two thills, of a triple-tree pivoted on a orosspiece of the same, a singletree on the 1 middle and one on each end of the triple-tree, and of straps passed around the ends of the double-tree and through loops on the sides of the thills.
The invention also consists in a neck-yoke bar held on the free ends of the shafts and provided with three straps.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate 2 5 corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved shafts. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, parts being in section.
The shafts or thills A are pivoted to clips 0 B, held on the front aXle, C, in the usual manner. Near their rear ends they are united by a cross-piece, D, on the center of which a tripletree, E, is pivoted, having a single-tree, F, pivoted on each end. A single-tree, G, is pivoted on the middle of the triple-tree E.
Straps H, passed around theend parts of the.
(No model.)
triple-tree outside of the thills, are passed through loops J on the outer sides of the thills to prevent either end of the triple-tree being swung forward too far. On the front ends of o thills a cross-bar, K. is held by eyes L, secured on the rod K, and throughwhich the ends of the thills pass. On the middle and on each end of the bar K a strap, M, is secured, which are adapted to be secured to the horses collars, the bar K being the neck-yoke. Three horses can thus be hitched to the two shafts A. If but one horse is to be hitched, the triple-tree E and the two single-trees F and the neckyoke are removed. 7 Y
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the thills A, ofthe tripletree E, the single-trees F F G, the straps H,passed around the ends ofthe triple-tree, and of the loops J on the sides of the thills, through which loops the straps H are passed, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the thills A, ofthe 6o triple'tree E,the single-trees F G,thc straps H. passed around the ends of the triple-tree and through loops J on the sides of the thills, the crossbarK on the free ends of the thills, and of the straps M, secured on the said bar, substantially as herein shown and described.
