IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-TREES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom ct may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID W. KAUFFMAN, of
Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illi- ,nois,.have invented a new and valuable Improvement in pose hereinafter described, the object being the production of a whiffletree simple in construction, which will equalize the draft, single-trees being dispensed with as ordinarily used.
Referring to the drawing- A represents a whiflietree having hooks for the connecting of the traces at its extremities.
On each side of its center is a horizontal hole for the passage of the rods 1) and b, which have at one end hooks for connecting the traces, and are fastened at the other to the extremities of the short whiflletree G.
The device d, by which the two whifiietrees A and O are connected, is in the form of a clevis, and is fixed by a bolt to the whifilctree 'A, and by a pivot to the whiflletree 0. It is also provided with holes for attachment to the tongue of a wagon or other object.
In this manner is formed a compound whiflletree that -is' simple in construction, cheap, and strong, as well as light and convenient, and that dispenses with the ordinary single-trees and the awkward cross-hitchiug sometimes used, and that equalizes the draft upon the animals shoulders.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The compound whiflletree herein described, consisting of the front whifiiletree A having trace-fasteners at its extremities, the rear whiflletree 0 having trace-fasteners at its extremities which pass through holes or mortises in the whflietree A, and the connecting-iron a, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The short rear wbifflctree 0 having the rods 7) and b, substantially as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
