J. A. LITTLE.
TUG FASTENER FOR WHIFPLETREBS.
No. 307,125. PatentedjO'ct. '28, 1884.
Attorney N. PETERS. Phclo-Lflhognpher. Washington. u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. LITTLE, OF CARTERSBURG, INDIANA.
TUG-FASTENER FOR WHIFFLETREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,125, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed July 14, 1884. (N0 mntlelJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oartersburg, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug-Attaching Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view taken on line 3 9 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail View in perspective of the wire loop; and Fig. 4, a view showing a modification of the means used for attaching the loop to the single-tree.
The present invention has for its object to provide simple and effective means for connecting the tugs 0r traces to the single-tree of a vehicle; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
I11 the accompanying drawings, A represents one end of a single-tree, and B the tug or trace having the usual opening to slip it over the end of the single-tree.
As a means of holding the tug or trace on the end of the single-tree, I provide a loop,C, through which the tug passes. This loop Gis formed of wire, the ends of the wire immediately in the rear of the loop being brought together to form a strong and rigid shank, a. After being thus brought together to form the shank a, the ends of the wire extend upward, as shown at b, at right angles tot-he shanlgand thence in a direction at right angles to the loop to form a frame or yoke, D. This yoke D, I pivot to the upper and lower sides ofthe single-tree A, and its position with relation to theloop C admit-s of the latterbeing brought parallel with the single-tree or at a right angle or acute angle when necessary to disconnect the tug or trace. The yoke D may be pivoted to the single-tree in any suitable manner, either by bending the ends of the yoke downward and have them enter a hole in the upper and lower sides of the whiflietree 0r singletree, so that theloop may be swung outward, as desired, in holding the tug or trace in position or swung back in releasing it.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of the means used for connecting the yoke to the singletree, which consists in forming eyes on the extremity of the ends of the yoke and using a rivet or bolt passing through the eyes and through the single-tree.
Having now fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
A device for holding tugs or traces on whiffletrees orsingle-trees. consisting of a wireloop through which the end of the tug or trace'
