' 0. L. LEWIS.
/ v WHIFFLETREE GONNEGTION. No. 245,079. Patented Aug. 2,1881.
ATTORNEY N. PETERS, Plwurmhu mr, Washington. D. a
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. LEWIS, OF STANTON, MICHIGAN.
WHIFFLETREE-CONNECTI ON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 245,079, dated August 2,1881.
I Application filed May 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. LEWIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Stan-' ton, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-Oonneetions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the to art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of connections between the single and double trees whereby they may be easily connected or disconnected at will and it consists in a cheap, simple, and effective construction of the parts,
as will be more fully hereinafter described,
and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents aplan of the device when the single trees are in position for use; Fig. 2, a detail showing the coupling-link ready to be removed from the double-tree iron; Fig. 3, another detail, showing the'link being'separated from the singletree iron; and Fig. 4, a detail of the link.
Arepresents the double-tree, having on each end the iron B, provided with a round hole, I),
' for the link 0, and a slot, 0, at the back. The link 0 is providedwith a notch, c, on each side, and a rib, c, on the top to re-enforce the link where it is weakened by the notches.
Each of the whiflietrees W is provided with a center-iron, 1), having a loop, d, through which the whiflletree is passed, and a hole, at,
' and a slot, d similar to the double-tree end iron, except that the slot is parallel to the 40 whiffletree, instead of being at right angles.
The whiftletree-irons are each provided with a similar iron on each end, adapted to'reeeive a cockeye having a loop formed with notches,
and a rib similar tothelink here shownybut 4 5 I make no claim to the; cockeye in this case,
as it will form the'sub ect-matter of a separate application.
When it is desired to' couple or nneouple the parts it is only necessary to turn the link in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to bring the notches of the link in line with the edges of the slots, when the link will pass through theslot and the parts will be easily disconnected or connected, as desired, without the least probability of accidental uncoupling.
By the construction and arrangement here shown the 'end irons on the double-tree may be made verylight, as most of the strain comes on the latter.
The link 0, being provided with the rib c, is made as strong, or nearly so, as if there were no notches, and by arranging the notches as shown it is necessary to turn the single-tree and link around until the latter assumes the position shown in Fig. 2 before the link can be removed from the iron B, after which (and not before) the link can, by placing it in the position shown in Fig. 3, be removed out of the hole in the center-iron D, which construction and arrangement, although allowing of the ready coupling and uncoupling of the parts, entirely prevents any accidental uncoupling. 1
What I claim as new is- 1. The combination, with the iron B, having a hole, 12, and slot b, of the link 0, provided with notches c and rib c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the link 0, having notches c and rib c, of the center-iron D, provided with a hole, at, and slot 01 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combinatiomwith the double-tree A, provided with the iron B, and the whiffletree W, having the iron D, of the link 0, having notches c and rib c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. LEWIS.
