Be it known that I, JAMES B. PYLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moore, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Apparatus,

of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a draft appa* ratus for carriages and the like and has for its object the production of eiiicient bracing means whereby the main tree will be prevented from twisting upon the king-bolt.

Another object of this invention is the production of a device which is simple in construct-ion, efficient in operation and consists of a comparatively small number of arts.

Vith these and other objects in View this invention consist-s of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals l designates the pole to which is pivoted the main tree 2 by means of a king bolt 3. Swingle trees 4L are secured to main tree 2 by means of pivot bolts 5. A truss bar 6 is carried by the top of the trees having its respective ends secured to the bolts 5. A hammer strap 7 is carried by the rea-r of the pole 1 and comprises a loop portion 8 which straddles the truss bar 6 and is secured intermediate the ends thereof by means of a rivet or bolt 9. The rear of the hammer strap 7 is bent around the rear end of the pole 1 as is illustrated in Fig. 2. The hammer strap 7 is provided with a notch 10 upon each side edge, intermediate its ends. A brace 11 is carried by the pole 1 and is provided with a forwardlyeXtending foot 12 having an aperture formed therein through which passes a pin 13 for securing the brace 5 in engagement with thepole. The` brace 11 is alsoprovided with a forwardly extending Iend 14 which end is provided with a pair of` notch portions 15 being adapted to regis`- ter with the notches 10 formed in the ham- 'mer strap. A band 16 is placed around the hammer strap 7 and end 14 and is seated in the notches l0 and 15 for firmly holding the hammer strap and brace together.

From the foregoing description it will be obvious that no movement will be allowed the brace owing to the pin 13 which engages the foot l2, thereby preventing the trees from twisting, since the brace will firmly support the hammer strap and resist any forward movement of trees.

In Fig. 7 I have shown an embodiment of the present device wherein the upper end 14 of the brace 11 is welded or secured to the hammer strap by means of a rivet 17 or other securing means. The foot 12 is fixedly secured to the pole 1 by means of a rivet 18 and is held against any movement thereby. Itwill therefore be obvious that the hammer strap will be great-ly reinforced and the main tree will be prevented from twist-ing forwardly upon the king bolt 3, which very often happens in the devices now in use which results in bending the king bolt or breaking the same.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A device for preventing the twisting of a tree upon its king bolt, comprising a hammer strap, a truss carried by said tree, said tree being carried by a pole and being engaged by said hammer strap intermediate its end, said strap being provided with a notch formed upon each edge, a brace provided with an angle upper end having notches formed upon its edges, a band passing around said end and hammer strap and f1tting in said notches for firmly holding said brace in engagement with said hammer strap, a forwardly extending foot formed upon the lower end of said brace and being provided with an aperture, and a pin passlng through said aperture and engaging said pole for preventing any movement of said oot.

2. A device of the class described comprising a pole, a truss bar, a tree, a hammer strap engaging said truss bar at its front end and engaging said pole at its rear end, a brace provided with an upper angle end secured to said hammer strap, and a forwardly extending foot secured to said pole for bracing said hammer strap and prevent'- ing said tree from twisting upon its king bolt.

3. In a device for preventing the twisting of a tree'upon its king bolt comprising a pole, a tree and a hammer strap and a truss carried by said tree, said strap being provided with a notch formed up 0n eaoh edge, a brace provided with an angular upper end, having notchesformed upon its edges, a band passing around said end and hammer through said aperture and engaging said 15 pole. v
