Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 23, 1912.
Patented June 17, 191 3.
Serial No. 699,294..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. AIMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stillwater, in the county of Washington and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jointed Tongues and Trucks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a jointed tongue and truck and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device of this character with improved means for securing the tongue to the truck proper.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means whereby the tongue may be quickly and readily applied to use and which may be readily removed, should the occasion require such removal and still another object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device applied to use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 1.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the main beam or the like of the binder truck, the outer end of which has counter-sunk in the upper and lower faces thereof the plates or strips 2 which are held in position by means of the bolts 3 and also secured to the upper face of the truck beam 1, adjacent the outer end thereof is the plate or strip 4 which is bent upwardly to be spaced from the top face of said beam 1 and have a spring action with respect thereto. A pin or bolt 5 extends through an opening in the outer end of the spring plate 4 and also extends through a channel 6 disposed vertically through the beam 1, whereby a draft bar or double-tree may obviously be held on the member 1.
An inverted U-shaped member 6 forming a substantial bolster for the device has the lower portion thereof curved or bent as shown at 7 and rotatably mounted between the free ends thereof is a supporting wheel 8. Formed between the arms of the member 6 and below the horizontal portion thereof is a bridge piece 9 and extending through said horizontal portion is a stud or the like 10, the lower portion of which is reduced and extended through the bridge piece 9. A key or the like 11 extending through the reduced portion of the stud 1O securely retains the latter on the member 6 and the projecting portion of the stud 10 is extended through a vertical channel 12 formed in the member 1 adjacent the free end thereof. That portion of the stud 10 which extends above the beam 1, after passing through the channel 12, has encircled thereon a collar 13 and a set screw 14 extending through said collar is adapted to be engaged with the stud, whereby it will be appreciated that the member 6 may be removably held to the truck.
In order to secure a tongue or pole 15 to the beam 1 of the truck, a pair of straps or arms 16 are provided and secured to the side faces of the beam 1, by means of the bolts 17, said arms 16 having portions thereof bent outwardly in opposite directions from the beam 1. The free ends of these arms or straps 16 which terminate in a line with the end of the beam 1 are forked or bifurcated, as shown at 18, the furcations thereof being provided with alining openings. The inner end of the tongue 15 is also provided with a pair of straps or arms 19 which are secured to the side faces thereof by means of the bolts 20 and portions of these arms 19 are also bent outwardly in opposite direc tions from the tongue so that the free ends thereof may be readily entered between the furcations of the outer ends of the arms 16. The free ends of these arms 19 are also provided with openings which are adapted to aline with the outer ends of said arms 16 and when so positioned for alinement, a bolt 21 is extended therethrough and the free end thereof engaged with a nut 22. In disposing this bolt through the arms 16 and 19, the same is also disposed through a channel adjacent the outer end of the beam 1 and disposed on said bolt between the beam 1 and the bifurcated ends of the arms 16 are the collars 23. A. bracing strip 24 is also provided and secured by means of a screw or the like 25 to the inner end of the tongue 15, the ends of said strip being bent and secured to the arms 19 adjacent the free ends thereof.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and durable tongue truck which is inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is In a tongue truck, the combination with a beam, a supporting wheel rotatably supported below said beam, a pair of straps secured to the sides of said beam and flared outwardly, the outer free ends of said straps being bifurcated and extended to the plane of the outer end of said beam; of a tongue, a pair of additional straps secured to the sides thereof and also flared outwardly, the free ends of said additional straps being eX- tended to a plane beyond the inner end of said tongue and disposed respectively in the bifurcated ends of the first mentioned straps to space the outer end of said beam and the inner end of the tongue from one another, a bracing strap secured to the inner end of said tongue and engaged with said additional straps, a bolt extended through the free ends of said first mentioned and additional straps and also through said beam to pivotally secure said tongue to the beam, collars disposed on said bolt between the bifurcated ends of the first mentioned straps and the sides of said beam, and means engaged with said bolt to secure the latter and said collars in position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
