"Prion,
ATENT GUNDER TORKELSON, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANKLIN N. RYAN, OF SAME PLACE.
THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFIGATIONforming :part of Letters Patent No. 663.709, dated December 11 1900; Application led March 2l). 1900. .Serial No. 9i44'7. (No model.)
To all whom t may-concern:
Beit known that I, GUNDER ToRKnLsoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Pani, in the county of Ramsey and State of 5 Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Io This invention relates to improvements in thill-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Y Figure l represents a vertical sectional view zo of my device. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the saine. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the holder, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the frame removed i'rom the holder.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designatesthe thill-coupling,
comprising the holder a, detachable frame b, and the spring c. This holder is provided with the usual perforations d d for the clip'- bolts c e, which secure the coupling to an 3c axle. The holder or is recessed, as atf, having side arms g g, which are vertically dovetailed, as at h 71 to receive the dovetailed arms it' of the frame b, which latter lits neatly within the recess in the holder. This frame comprises the dovetailed side arms jj, which are connected by the cross-bar Ic, leaving a recess l, in which the locking end fm of the spring is placed. This spring is bent at n and o, forming the pressure part thereof for 4o the end of the thillp, and the vertically-extended end forms a snap or lock whereby the frame is held to the holder. The same is provided with the opening r, which snaps over the short lug s on` the rear inner wall of the recess aforesaid.
It will be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that the thill is connected to the frame by the pin t passing through the eye of the thill and through the eyes o o in 5o the forward ends of the arms of the frame, and the latter is then seated in the recess, the corresponding dovetailed portions engaging one another and the snap end of the spring engaging the lug in the recess of the holder. The end of the thill provides an eccentric, and when the thills are raised vertically the pressure of the spring is relaxed, and when the shafts are horizontal the pressure of the spring is great upon the ends of said shafts. 6o In releasing the shafts or thills from the coupling the snap end of the springis released from the lug and the frame can be raised out of the recess. The horizontal portion w of the spring is provided with perfor-ations, through which pass lugs that are on the lower face ot' the cross-bar of the frame, thereby rmly holding the antiratt-ler or spring tothe frame. Thus it will be seen that with my device there are no screws, bolts, or nuts em- 7o ployed and the coupling-pin is securely held in place by the two side arms of the holder when the device is in its normal position, and when the frame is detached from the holder said pin can be readily withdrawn and the thill detached from the frame, and the device,
as herein described, is durable, easily and quickly operated, and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what 8o I claim, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is-
l. In a thill-coupling the combination with the recessed holder provided with the dovetailed openings, of the detachable frame provided with dovetailed side lugs and openings for the thill-bolts, all substantially as described. f
2. In a thill-coupling, the combination of the recessed holder having the dovetailed re- 9o cesses and lug on its rear inner wall, the detachable frame comprising the side arms and cross-bar formed integral and the dovetailed lugs, the antirattler or spring having the upper free or spring end provided with the opening to receive the lug on the holder, whereby the frame is held securely in place on said holder all substantially as described.
3. In a thill-eoupling, the combination with the recessed holder, of the dovetailed frame provided with the lugs on its cross-bar, and the bent spring provided with the notch or 5 opening f, and perforations in the horizontal portion w, for engaging said lugs, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed lny signature in presence of two Witnesses.
