WHIFFLETREE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,652, dated October 20, 1891.

Application filed June 6. 1891, Serial No. 395,367. (No model-i 10 re whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS N. VAN PELT, acitizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletrees; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to obtain greater security for a ca'rriagein the event of a breakage of the whiflietree-pivot, to hold the whiflietree in a horizontal position more perfectly, to provide a peculiar spring-support for the ends of the said whiffletree, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the descriptions of the working parts.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate correspon ding parts in each of the figures, Figure l is a front elevation showing the relation of the improvements to the shafts and whiffletree, and Fig.-

2 is a plan of said parts.

In said drawings, a a are the shafts, b the cross-bar, and c the whiffletree pivoted at the center on a bolt din any ordinary manner, the whifiletree being raised more or less above the cross-bar by a block e to allow the interposition ofsprings f f, These are flat springs,

bent as shown in the edge view of Fig. 1, to engage the cross-bar at one end and the whiffletree at the other, the ends of the two springs bearing on the cross-barb at points approaching the center pin or pivotal bolt (1 and the opposite ends extending away from said pivotal bolt and providing a spring-support for the ends of the wliiflletree. The springs bear on plates f on the crossbar and whifiietree and are secured thereto by bolts 9 g.

Should the whiffletree become detached at the pivotal bolt because of breakage or otherwise, the springs f provide astrong metallic connection, which will sustain the draft and will certainly prevent accident.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination, with the whiffletree.

cross-bar, and pivot (Z, of metallic springs ff, bolted at their opposite ends to the said whiffletree and cross-bar, respectively, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with the Whiffietree and cross-bar of the shafts, of metallic springs secured to the cross-bar and extending oppositely and upwardly into engagement with the whiffletree toward the ends thereof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
