UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEFH IV. STEEL, OF4 GOSHEN, INDIANA.
DRAFT-EQUAUZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 293,283, dated February 1,2, 1884. Application filed November 17, 1883. (No model.)
T0 all wtontit may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH W. STEEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in draft-equalizers, whereby either two or three horses may be attached to the same tongue or pole. v
The improvement consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, a-s will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of the forward portion of a running-gear with tongue, showing my improve- Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the rear end ofthe tongue, with the attachments applied thereto, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hammer-strap.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the axle, notched on the upper side a short distance from either end 5 and B, the bolster, likewise notched on the under side, so as to correspond and register with the notches in the aXle to receive the hounds C between them. The forward ends of the hounds are arched or curved inward and approach each other to form a space for the reception of the pivotally-connected tongue or pole with a side attachment. One of the hounds-the right-hand one, looking in the direction of the tongueis curved more than the otherone, so as to se` cure a central draft for either two or three horses. The hounds are also provided 'with the guards D, secured thereto in any suitable manner at the front and rear ends, and the hounds are further provided at their rear ends with transverse barE.
The letter F indicates a tongue or pole of a vehicle provided at its rear end on one side with an extension, H, consisting of the curved front bar, a, the parallel bar b, and the rear transverse bar, c, substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The tongue proper, at its rearend, is provided with a hook, (l, to receive the hammerstrap c, between which and the tongue the double-tree K is pivotally connected, as shown in Fig. 2 of thedrawings.
To the side extension 'II of the pole are secured two straps, ff, united at their forward ends and perforated fto receive the bolt that connects the single-tree I thereto. The singletree I is further secured from vertical displacenient by means of the hammer-strap @,attached at its rear end to the hook d. This hammerstrap is so connected to the hookcZ that it can readily and easily be detached from the same,
and transferred and connected vto the hook d on the under side of the tongue when two horses only are used in the vehicle.
By this construction and arrangement of 65` parts I am enabled to produce a draft-equalizer suitable fdr either two or three horses, and to secure in either case a central hitch7 or draft.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tongue or pole having a side extension at vits'rear end, consisting of the curved front bar,
a, parallel bar b, the rear transverse bar, c, the straps ff', and hammer-strap e, said straps being perforated to receive the connecting-bolt of a single-tree, substantially as described.4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
