Description

B. RooT. REIN HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patent-ed June ,8, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK ROOT, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGANP RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 343,279, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed April 13, 1886. Serial No. 198,741. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIOK Roor, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to'provide a simple, durable, and reliable device for holding the driving-reins securely, and yetin such a manner as to allow them to be quiclly released, whenV desired. It is adapted to be secured to the Clash-board, seat, or any convenient part of the vehicle.
Figure 1 shows a rear view of the device attached to the upper edge of the dash-board. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view of a modified form with a long` baseplate to serve as a hand-hold. Fig. A is an edge view of the same.
A A are two clamping-jaws formed with flat faces a, which are cut away at b and c for the purpose of admitting the reins more easily. Each jaw has a laterally-extending foot, B, integral therewith and perforated for the passage of a pivot, O, which is firmly secured in the base-plate D. A lug, E, projects from each jaw A, and the ends of a spiral spring, F, are attached to said lugs, as shown. As
the lugs E E are at one side of a straight line passing through the pivots C O the spring F tends to constantly draw the jaws together.
In Figs. 3v and 4 I have shown the base-plate D provided with arms G G,f0r attaehing it to the edge of the dash-board to serve as a handhold.
When it is desired to secure the reins, they need onlytbe drawn downward and backward between the jaws A A, the ourved faces b c facilitating their entrance. As the jaws open rearwardly, any forward pull upon the reins only serves to clamp the jaws more tightly upon them. By drawing them backward and upward they are instantly released.
The spring F acts upon both jaws with equal force, and insuresaproper working of the device at all times.
. Having thus described niy invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination, with the base-plate D, of the jaws A A, having laterally-extending feet B B,the pivots O 0,,the lugs E E, projecting from the jaws A A at one side of` a line passing through said pivots O O, and the spring F,lying between said lugs and attached thereto at each end, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the pivoted springclamping jaws A A with the base-plate D, having arms G G, whereby it is adapted to serve as a hand-hold, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in vpresence of two witnesses.
FREDERIGK Roor.
