UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER \VILLTS CAlVTllON, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
SINGLETREE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 552,417, dated December 31,1895.
Application filed May '7, 1895. Serial No. 548,405. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER WILLIS CAW- THON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in a Singletree Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention consists in an improved device on the end of a singletree to hold the end of a harness-tug, and having the features made substantially as set forth hereinafter, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates the device in use. Fig. 2 shows sectional View of the device. Fig. 3 shows detail of parts separated.
A singletree A, of any suitable pattern, is used. On the end of this is fitted a peculiar ferrule 13, to which is pivoted or hinged at O a holder D. The end of ferrule B is beveled with a curve on the end, as shown. The holder D is made saddle-like, so as to clasp the ferrule B with projecting. flanges F, through which it is hinged by a pivot C. One end of holder D projects back as a handle H, held up from the singletree by a spring G, as in Fig. 1, so the hand may press it down to turn it on its hinge. The other end of holder D projects stirrup-like at L, over the end of ferrule B, in such way that it will engage with the tug K, between the end of ferrule B, and this stirrup, so. that when the horse draws forward on the tug the friction will draw the stirrup tight onto the tug, so as to bite onto and hold it, assisted by the spring Gr. WVhen the handle H is pressed in on the spring the other end of the part D passes back and loosens the bite on the tug, to release the horse.
Modifications may be made.
I claim- 1. A singletree having a ferrule B, with a part D, hinged onto it formed saddlewise with two flanges, a handle H, and stirrup like part L, so as to engage with bite onto and hold the tug, substantially as set forth.
2. A. singletree having a ferrule and a'stirv rup-holder hinged thereto with one end arranged to engage and hold the tug and the other projecting as a handle with a spring therein arranged to hold the stirrup part onto the tug to avoid its becoming loose when slackened, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER \VILLIS CAVVTHON.
