PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED WHIP-SOCKET AND RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 621,877, dated March 28, 1899. Application filed July 27, 1898. Serial No. 687,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WELoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Dent and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Whip-Socket and Rein-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined whip-socket and rein-holder; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularlydescribed, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my complete invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line a; a; of Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to combine with a practical whip-socket a rein-holder which will yieldingly hold or clamp the reins when not in use.
Briefly stated, the invention consists of a body portion which is adapted to be bolted or otherwise secured to the vehicle-body, a whip-socket hinged to said body portion, a lateral extension forming a part of said socket and normally in contact with the outer plane surface of the body portion, a bolt carried by the said body portion and passing loosely through said extension adjacent to the socket, a thumb-nut carried bythe projecting end of said bolt, and a coiled spring interposed between said extension and nut, the function of which will be hereinafter stated.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body portion, which is secured in any convenient position to the vehicle-body and to which my invention is adj ustably secured and carried. The whip-socket 2 proper may be of any desirable construction and, as shown in the drawings, will yieldingly and effectually hold the whip. Projecting from the body portion is a loop 3, which forms one member of a hinge, and projecting from one side of the socket and forming a rigid part thereof are two ears 4 4, which form the other member of a hinge, a pin 5 being passed through said ears, thereby hinging said socket to the body portion. Projecting laterally from the socket 2 is a yielding extension 6, the inner surface of which is normally in contact with the outer flat surface of the body portion, the reins to be held being inserted between said extension and body portion when not in use. Carried by the body portion and passing loosely through an opening 7, formed in the extension 6 adjacent to the socket 2, is a bolt 8, which is of sufficient length to extend a suitable distance beyond the outer surface of said extension and screwed on the screwthreaded projection end of said bolt is a thumb-nut 9, a coiled spring 8 being interposed between said nut and extension and encircling said bolt. By this means the yielding pressure of the extension against the body portion is made Variable, and consequently the reins will be properly and securely held. Formed in the outer end of the extension 6 is an opening 10, which receives a ring 11,which is grasped by the hand of the operator for moving the extension from out of contact with the body portion, whereby the reins may be easily placed in a position to be held, after which the ring is released by the hand and the reins securely held.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A combined whip-socket and rein-holder comprising a body portion, a socket hinged to the same, and extension forming a part of the socket and cooperating with the body portion, a bolt carried by the latter, and passing loosely through said extension adjacent to the socket, a thumb-nut screwed upon the end of said bolt and a coiled spring'interposed between said nut and extension and encircling said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
