SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,891, dated July 10, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL \VENDRIOII, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Rein- Holder, of which the following is a specifica tion.

My invention relates to an improvement in rein-holders; and it consists in the construe tion and arrangement ofparts more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for holding reins when they are released and which may be attached to any vehicle. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown a perspective view of my improvement.

In the drawing, l3 represents the vertical side of a frame, and a the top projecting out at right angles from said side.

0 represents the bottom of the frame, which also projects out at right angles from the side B, directly under the top a. This bottom por tion, 0, is constructed with an inclined upper face, as shown.

Pending from the center of the under side of the top a is an elastic spring, E, it being rigidly secured to said top and extending down in proximity to the bottom a. The lower end of this spring has a block, (I, rigidly secured thereon, which is of a size equal to the size of the bottom 0, its under face being inclined in an opposite direction to the upper face of said bottom and resting against the same when in its normal position. Pivotally secured to the bottom and extending down is a forked clasp, f, having a thumb-screw, g, passing through one of its arms about midway its length. This clasp is adapted to be placed over the dash or other convenient part of a vehicle, and made fast thereon by said thumbscrew.

The operation of the above-described device is as follows: \Vhen the driver wishes to lay the reins down, he forces the block (1 back in a direction opposite to the incline on the bottom 0. The reins are then placed between the said bottom and the block d, and the spring forces the said block back and binds the reins in between the same and the bottom, and owing to the inclined surfaces of the same the drawing of the reins in the direction of the horse more tightly binds them in the holder and prevents them from slipping.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a frame having upper and lower projections, of a block hav ing an elastic or spring connection with the upper projection and placed in proximity to thelowerprojection,snbstantiallyas described.

2. A rein-holder consisting of a frame having an upper projection, and a lower projection having an inclined upper face, a block having an inclined lower face, and a spring for normally holding said faces in proximity to each other, substantially as described.

8. A rein-holder consisting of a frame having an upper projection and an inclined lower projection, a spring secured to said upper projection and extending down, an inclined block secured on the lower end of said spring, and a pivoted clasp on the lower projection, substantially as described.
