Description

W. RENE.
REIN HOLDER.
(No Model.)
Patented Apr. 7,1891.
L tho anew UNITED STATES" PAT NT OFFICE.
WALDEMAR RENE, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,763, dated. April 7, 1891.
Application filed August 12, 1890- Serial No. 361,815. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALDEMAR RENE, a citizen of theUnited States, residingat Council Blufis, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rein-holders for attachment to the dash-boards of vehicles; and the object sought to be attained is to produce a more compact, simple, durable, and convenient arrangement than has heretofore been in use.
\Vith these .ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and combination of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device as attached to a dash-board and in the act of holding the lines; Fig. 2, a front view; Fig. 3, a sectional View through line 00 0c; and Fig. 4 a side view, with a portion of the outside casing broken away to show the internal construction.
The main casting consists of a box or he]- low casing A, an arm B projecting from the upper end of said box and constituting a rigid jaw having serrations on its opposite sides, and a bracket 0 back of the box A and arranged to fit over the dash-board and provided with suitable clamping-screws D to securely attach it to said dash-board.
At the base of the rigid arm or jaw B, on opposite sides thereof, are formed corresponding lugs or projections E, on which are pivoted the jaws F, having roughened or serrated inside faces G, and thus forming, with the central rigid arm B, two sets of jaws on opposite sides thereof for holding the lines. The lower ends of the jaws form arms H, which extend on opposite sides of the box A, and are given a shape to exactly conform to that of the sides of said box, so that they fit snugly against the same when the reins are in place, asseen in Fig. 1, and from the inextends transversely through the upper portion of the box, and upon it is placed a coilspring N, the opposite ends of which are carried to the bottom of said box and run through the end of the pins J, respectively, or otherwise connected thereto, as seen more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. Asuitable removable plate 0 closes one side of the box A, so that access can be gained thereto in case of breakage of the spring or displacement of the parts. It will be readily seen that the spring N acts to throw the lower ends of the arms H out, and hence the jaws F against the central rigid arm B, and thus when the lines are inserted between the jaws on either side of said central arm they will be securely held in place, but can be easily released by pressing together the lower end of the arms H. The upper ends of the jaws are made flarin g to facili tate the insertion of the reins, and it will also be evident that the jaws can be used independently of each other, if desired. The pins J act as guides for the pivoted jaws, and the latter thus work freely without lateral movement and consequent binding of the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reinholder consisting of a central rigid arm or jaw having roughened opposite faces and a pair of pivoted jaws on opposite sides of said central arm and spring-actuated to bear against the latter, whereby the reins can be held on opposite sides of said rigid jaw between the latter and the pivoted jaws, as set forth.
2. A rein-holder consisting of a body portion, a rigid arm extending therefrom, a pair of pivoted jaws on opposite sides of said rigid arm and spring-actuated toward the lat ter, and projections from said pivoted jaws engaging suitable openings in said body portion, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A rein-holder consisting of a box or casing', a rigid arm or jaw projecting therefrom, a pair of pivoted jaws on opposite sides of said rigid arm, projections from the arms of said jaws extending into said box and a spring contained in the latter and connected to said projections, substantially as and for the purpose described.
&. In a rein-holder, the combination of a box or casing, a rigid arm or jaw projecting therefrom, a pair of pivoted jaws on opposite sides of said rigid arm, projections from the arms of said pivoted jaws extending into said box, a transverse screw in the latter, and a eoi1-spring on said bolt having its opposite ends connected to the projections from the I 5 jaw-arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WALDEMAR RENE.
