G. s. (1111111111111. BATH 0R FLESH BRUSH.
110. 511,769. Patented Jan. 2, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE@J BATH OR FLESl-i BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,769, dated January 2, 1894.
Application led April 27, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GLADDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath and Flesh Brushes; and lI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeing had to the annexed drawings, making apart ot' this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to that class of bath or iiesh brushes provided with detachable handles, and the object thereof is to provide a simple, strong, and durable means for attaching the handle to the back of the brush whereby the handle is firmly and securely held thereto and readily disconnected when the brush is to be used without a handle.
The invention consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view showing the handle detached from the brush; Fig. 2 a side elevation with the handle connected in place.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the usual bath or flesh brush of any preferred construction, and B represents the handle which is made slightly tapering and having upon its sides longitudinal grooves a, which grooves diminish in depth in a direction t0- ward the rear of the handle, as shown more clearly in Fig. l of the drawings.
The device employed for holding the handle in engagement with the back ot' the brush, consists of the clamp C constructed of a continuous piece of spring wire. The wire is cut the proper length and bent at or near its middle to form an eye h, and thence the wire is Serial No. 472,046. (No model.)
bent so as to extend on a different horizontal plane to form clamping-arms c, and the extremities of these arms terminate in eyes el. The arms c are upon a higher plane than the eyes b d so that when the eyes are secured to the back of the brush by suitable screws or other like fastenings, the arms will be above the brush back a suflicient distance to insure their acting as spring clamping arms. When the-end of the handle B is inserted between the clamping arms c, said arms will seat themselves in the grooves c and by their binding action against the sides of the handle Will rmly hold the handle in place. The handle being slightly tapering and the grooves decreasing in depth as they approach the rear end thereof, act as a wedge to render more secure the handle on the brush-back when held by the spring clamp.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bath or flesh brush having secured to its back a spring Wire clamp, and a handle therefor having longitudinal grooves upon its sides, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A bath or flesh brush and a spring clamp connected to the back thereof, and consisting of a wire bent to form eyes and parallel clamping arms extending above the plane of the eyes for the purpose of connecting the handle to the brush, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ot' two witnesses.
GEORGE S. GLADDIN G.
