neurons-HOLDER.
almAmuruuuu-mtln- Application filed February 17, 1916.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY SAMUEL Mann, residing at Champaign, 1n the county oi Champaign and State of Illinois, have ,in-
vented a new and Improved Articlel'lolder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that class of tool holders adapted to be attached to the clothing of the user for conveniently holding on his person such tools or implements having handles, for example, carpenters hammers, painters scraping knives, painters duster-s, etc., and it primarily seeks to provide a holder of the general character stated, of a simple and economical construction that can be conveniently attached to the workingmans jacket or blouse and which effectively serves its intended purpose.
lVith other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the peculiar construction and novel arrangement of the parts which constitute my improved tool holder as set out in the following description, specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the same being shown as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the holder, the tool handle being indicated thereon in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof on the line 3-3 on Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line 1-4l on Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view that illustrates several parts that constitute my invention in detail.
In the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is a base plate provided with a safety pin 2 on the end side, whereby the holder maybe conveniently and securely attached to the clothing of the user, as is operatively shown in Fig. 1.
The plate 1 has a longitudinal slot 3 at each end and in each of the said slots is adjustably held a clamp screw 4i, with which connect the tongue lilre ends 50 of a pair of oppositely disposed spring metal clamping jaws each of which includes a body portion 51 which curves outwardly from the base plate 1, and clip-like spring tongues 52 that are stamped up out of the body portion 51 as shown.
By referring more particularly to Fi 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the body portion 51 forms a seat against which Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 78,929.
the handle a" of the tool is clamped by the spring clips or clamping members 52 when the tool is inserted asshown.
H To aid in holding the jaws 55 from working up and down on the base plate, when the latter is adjusted for receiving the handle of the tool, the outer ends of the tongues 52 have inwardly bent spring-like portions which project through the slot 21in the plate 1 to engage the fabric upon which the base plate 1 may be secured.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, the complete arrangement, the manner of its use, and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent.
By reason of providing the laterally adjustable jaws 5 with spring clips as shown, the said jaws can be set to separate the clips so they may engage and clamp the opposite edges of the handles of different tools, it being understood the resiliency of the body portion 50 and the clips 52 of the jaws provides "for easily slipping the handle between the said clips and the body portion of the said jaws.
What I claim is:
1. An adjustable holder for tools having handles; comprising in combination, a base plate having means for securing it flatwise on the garment of the user, a pair of opposing jaws that are laterally adjustable 011 the base plate, the said aws forming a seat for engaging one face of the tool handle when the latter is applied to the holder, and a clamp member for each aw adapted to engage the opposite edges of the tool handle to thereby hold the same on the aforesaid side.
2. An adjustable holder for tools having handles; comprising in combination, a base plate having means on one face for securing it fiatwise on the garment of the user, the said plate having a pair of alined longitudinal slots, one at each end thereof, a pair of opposing resilient jaws, a set screw connection movable in each slot for adjusting the jaws laterally, said jaws each including a body portion that forms a seat for the tool handle when it is applied to the holder, each of the body portions including a spring clip at their inner edge for engaging the opposite edges of the handle, the said spring clips being stamped and shaped up from the said body portion.
3. An adjustable holder for tools having Patented May 16,1916..-
of the body portions including a spring clip at their inner edge for engaging the opposite edges of the handle, the said spring clips being stamped and shaped up from the said body portion, that end of each of the jaws that engages the set screw having an inturned prong that extends down through the slots in the base plate.
