To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. Ross, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strip and Matrix Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved strip and matrix holder especially adapted for use by dentists in finishing and inserting fillings in proximate cavities and also adapted for use for holding strips ofvarious kinds and for use as a matrix holder, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character embodying an arm having a slot for the reception of a strip and also having a recess or groove in one side and a clamping member pivotally connected to said arm for movement toward and from the same and having a spring jaw provided with a portion to snap into said recess or groove, and thereby coact with the slot in holding a strip attached to the arm.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strip holder constructed and arranged in accord ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of the same on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation partly in section of the same also on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of my improved strip holder in which the strip is held in a position at right angles to the handle.
The handle of the holder may be of the form shown at 1 in Fig. 1 or of the form shown at 2 in Fig. 4.
Referring especially to the form of the device shown in Fig. 1, the handle is formed from a single piece of wire of suitable gage, bent to form a loop 3, one end of the wire at the closed end t of the loop being bent outwardly to form an arm 5, the other portion of the wire being extended longitudinally as at 6 and also bent outwardlyto form an arm 7. The arms are identical in construction and each is provided with a slot or slit 8 to receive a strip 9, of emery cloth or other material to be used, the strip being doubled around one side of each arm as at 10. Each arm is also provided with a groove or recess 11 in each side and into one of which the doubled or reversely bent portion of the strip may be pressed. Each arm is provided with a clamping member 12 of approximately semi-tubular form and made of sheet spring metal of suitable kind so that the sides of each clamping member form jaws 13. Each jaw has an inwardly bent portion 14 adapted to snap into one of the grooves or recesses 11 and each clamping member is pivotally connected at its inner end as at 15 to the inner portion of one of the arms and is provided at its outer end with a projecting lip or finger portion 16. The clamping members are arranged in reverse relation to each other, so that each is on the outer side of one of the arms, and hence, when a strip has been stretched between the arms engaged in the slits or slots thereof and its ends have been doubled back on one side of the arms, the clamping members may be turned toward each other on their pivots, and the portions 14 of their spring jaws, or side walls 13 engaged with the grooves or slots of the arms and on the outer side of the doubled portions of the strip to detachably and yet firmly secure the ends ofthe strips to the arms of the holder as will be understood. In the forms of the invention shown in Fig. 1, the arms are in a common plane with the handle.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the arms are arranged in a plane at.
right angles tothe handle and at opposite ends of a fork 17 at the inner end of the handle.
Other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A strip holder having a pair of arms arranged in spaced relation and each provided with a slot for the reception of a strip and also having recesses on opposite sides,
and clamping members pivotally connected to said arms and arranged on the outer sides thereof, each clamping member being of spring material and being approximately semi-tubular and provided with jaws for arrangement on opposite sides of the arms, each of the said jaws having a portion to snap into one of said recesses, and each Gopies of this patent may be obtained for WM.
