BRUSH.
No. 426,218. Patented Apr. 22, 1890.

WILLIAM A. QUIGG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,213, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed June 1, 1889.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. QUIGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in brushes, its objects being to provide a brush which may be fastened in various positions to a jointed handle by means of an adjustable fastening device, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The above-mentioned objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure represents a side same adjustably attached to the end of the jointed handle.
Referring to the drawing, the letterA indicates the body of the brush, which is provided with the bristles or fibers 15, set therein in the usual manner. The back of the body midway between the ends of the brush is provided with a socket or recess 0, and the sides of the brush are provided with similar recesses D, also mid way between the ends, for the purpose hereinafter explained. Between the recesses O and D and the ends of the brush the body is deeply recessed or cut away, as indicated by the letter E, and the shoulders F of said recesses or cut portions are provided with 1011- gitudinal recesses G.
The letter II indicates the upper end of the upper section of a jointed handle, which is Serial No. 312,870. (No model.)
provided with a projecting pin I, which is adapted to fit either of the recesses C D. The said end of said upper section is screw-threaded externally for a short distance, and upon said screw-threaded portion is mounted the spiral coils of a wire frame K, the coil of which corresponds in pitch to the pitch of the screwthread, so as to work adj ustably thereon. The frame is provided with spring-arms L on opposite sides, which are bent laterally toward each other at their ends, so as to take into the recesses G when the brush is applied to the end of the handle II, as shown in the drawing.
It is evident that my invention is applicable to dustingbrushes, window-washing brushes, whitewash-brushes, and brushes of various descriptions, and hence I do not desire to restrict myself to any particular class of brushes. The brush may be applied to the end of the handle so as to project directly from it or laterally to either side, in order to adapt it to use on ceilings or side walls at will.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the body of the brush, having recesses O D and E G, of the handle H, having an external screw'thread and a projecting pin at one end to engage the recesses O D, the spirally-coiled frame engaging the threaded portion of the handle, and the arms thereof engaging the recesses G, whereby the brush may be adjustablyfastened to the handle II in various positions, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. A. QUIGG.
