UNTTED STATES Patented September 1, 1903.
HARDY B. HARRELL, OF GAINESVILLE, TEXAS.
DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 737,616, dated September 1, 1903.
Application tiled .Tune 20, 1903.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HARDY B. HARRELL, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Gainesville,in the countyof Cooke and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Dental Instruments; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a device for dental use in which a suitable instrument or piece of wood may be firmly clutched and securely held at the desired angle to reach difficult cavities and surfaces of the teeth in excavating cavities, scaling 0E tartar, and polishing difficult surfaces, thereby supplying a want in the dental profession as well as a much needed instrument for the people in `general for cleaning the teeth.
The invention consists in a dental instrument constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a sectional elevation of a dental instrument constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, perspective views in detail of the wood point, the upper end of the clamping-rod, and the bifurcated end of the tubular shank.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a suitable handle of wood, metal, rubber, or any other preferred material and of any desirable shape, said handle having a central bore extending axially through it and in which fits a tubular guide B. This guide B has a circumferential flange a, which overlaps the outer end of the handle, and that part of the tubular guide extending above the iiange is bifurcated to provide clamping-jaws C, which extend out at an acute angie to each other and are provided with concave seats o for the instrument that is to be held, such as piece of Wood, as shown at D, when used for cleaning teeth or other instru- Serial No. 162,323. (No model.)
ment or device used in the dental profession required to be held at an angle to reach difficult cavities and surfaces of the tooth. A clamping-rod E extends through the tubular guide B and has an eye c at its end, through which the piece of wood D engages, and the opposite end of the rod is screw-threaded, as shown at d, with which engages a screw-nutF, which nut forms the extremity of the handle. In turningthe nut in the proper direction the clamping-rod will be drawn in the direction of the nut and the wood piece drawn tightly against the concave seats of the clampingjaws and the wood piece firmly held in posi-` tion.
It is evident that any changes or modification in the details of construction may be resorted to without in any way affecting the essential features of the invention such as would corne Within ordinary mechanicaljudgment.
I-Iaving now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A dental-instrument holder comprising a suitable handle, a clamping-rod having an eye at its end for the instrument to engage, a tubular guide for the rod having clampingjaws at its end, and means for adjusting longitudinally said clamping-rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dental-instrument holder comprising a suitable handle, a tubular guide extending through the same, a clamping-rod engaging the guide and having screw-threads at its end and a tightening-nut engaging said screwthreads, an eye upon the opposite end of the rod, and clamping-jaws upon the end of the tubular guide, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARDY B. HARRELL.
