UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
FREDERICK R. KALDENBERG, OF NEVI YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR CUTLERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,091, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed December 9,1887. Serial No. 257,472. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom/.it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. KALDEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Cutlery, of which the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact speciiication.
My invention has for its object the construction ot' a simple and durable handle for cutlery which is susceptible of a varied degree of ornamentation by the union of materials which diii'er essentially in color and general appearance; and to accomplish this I form the handle ot' several sections mounted on a core or shank provided with a flange at one end, and having a screw-threaded extremity Iitting into a threaded end section, so that the several sections are iirmly clamped together to form a solid handle.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my improvement, Figure l is aside elevation ot' a knife-handle made according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, with the shank shown partly in elevation.
Let d represent the core or shank of the handle, on which the several sections which compose the body of the handle are mounted. This is made tubular its entire length, or provided with a suitable recess, Z), extendin partly through the same, .tor the reception of the tang of the knife-blade, which is secured therein by means ot' molten lead or other material in the usual manner. On the inner end ot' the shank is t'orn'ied a flange, c, which may be either soldered, screwed, or wedged on its extremity to form a bearing-piece for the upper section, g, and, in connection with the screw, constitute the clamping device. The opposite end of the shank is provided with a screw-thread, d, and is made to screw into a correspondinglythreaded socket formed in the outer end section, f, of the handle.
The body of the handle is composed of the two end sections, f and g, the central section, h, and the two intermediate sections, and j. These sections, with the exception 0f the lower one, are provided with a central perforation to receive the shank a. The sections are made to differ essentially in color and external configuration, so that a highly-ornamental effect can be given to the handle. After the sections are mounted on the shank, the end section `is screwed on, which serves to clamp the intervening sections firmly together. On the under side of the flange c is provided one or more pins or screws, b', which tit into recesses in the upper sect-ion, g, to prevent the shank and flange from turning when under strain.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A handle for cutlery, consisting' of a tubular shank or core provided with a iiange at one end, and having a screw-threaded extremity fitting a threaded socket in an end section, and intermediate sections mounted on said shank to Aform a solid handle, as set forth.
