Description

UNITED STATE-s Patented November 8, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,292, dated November 8, 1904. Application. filed May 9, 1904. Serial No. 207,160. (No modelJ To all whom, t 71mg/ concern.'
Beit known that I, ABBOTT E. TOwNsEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oentralia, in the county of Lewis and State of lasliington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is Yan imprOved'saw-handle adapted for use in connection with a crosscutsaw; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is partly a side elevation and partly sectional view of a handle embodying my improvements, showing the same attached to a crosscut-saw. Fig'. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a fr of Fig. 1.
To the saw, (indicated at (0,) near one end thereof, is pivotally attached a connectingscrew 1, which is bifurcated, as at 2, for the reception of the saw-blade. The said connecting-screw passes through an opening 3 in a guard 4, the latter being' provided on one side with a groove 5 for the reception of the end of the saw and being provided on its outer Side with an arm 6, having an upturned lip T, and an arm 9, the latter being at the upper end of the guard. The arm 8 has a threaded opening in which operates a clamping-screw 9. The same is here shown as provided with a winged head to enable it to be readily turned.
A spindle 10, which is detachable from the guard and the connecting-screw, is provided at its Outer end with a cylindrical eye l1 for the reception of the handle-bar 12, which may be of any suitable length and may be made of any suitable material, wood being commonly employed for thispurpose. The spindle l0 is provided with a screw-threadedborefor the reception Of the connecting-screw, and it is further provided with a countersink 13 and a diametrically-enlarged head 14, havingl a cylindrical portion l5 and a tapered portion 16. The countersink 13 is screw-threaded and is engaged by an adjusting screw sleeve 16, which serves as a jamnut, the threads of which are reverse to those of the connectingscrew 1, and said adjusting screw-sleeve' has a milled head 17 to bear against the guard 4. The lip 7 of the arm 6 engages the tapered portion 16 of the head of the spindle l0, and the upper side of the cylindrical portion l5 of said head is engaged by the screw 9. It will be understood that the coacting screw 1, spindle 10, and guard 4 enable the handle-bar to be firmly connected to the saw. The adjusting screw-sleeve permits such adjustment of the spindle lO as may be necessary to aline the handle-.bar 12 with the saw. It will be observed that there is no obstruction whatever on the Outer side of the cylindrical eye ll, through which the handle-bar is passed, so that the handle of the saw may be very readily grasped by one hand at the point required to apply the power to the saw directly in line therewith. Hence a saw provided with my improved handle may be used with one hand or both, as may be desired, and the handle may be adjusted to any-desired angle relatively to the blade.
From the foregoing' description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A detachable and adjustable saw-handle comprising a screw connected to the saw-blade,4
a spindle connected to the screw and provided with an eye for a handle-bar, a guard having a depending arm and a binding-screw, and a jam-nut sleeve fitted to a threaded socket in the spindle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
