T'. NICHOLS. DOWEL CUTTER.
Patented Jan. 28, 1896.
Wham 6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
THOMAS NICHOLS, OF TEMPLETON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GILMAN WAITE, OF SAME PLACE.
DOWEL-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,624, dated January 28, 1896.
' Application filed. September 16, 1892. Serial No. 446,064. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, THOMAS NICHOLS, of Templeton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dowel-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved dowel-cutter; Fig. 2, another side view looking at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a View, partly in section and partly in elevation, with the guard and its clamp removed; Fig. 4, a bottom View; and Fig. 5, a detail, in perspective, of the knife.
My invention relates to dowel-cutters with adjustable knife or guide blades; and the main feature of my invention consists in an improvement which permits a simple and accurate adjustment of the blades.
In the drawings, a represents a chuck which in the form shown consists of the cylindrical portion a, the lateral extensions a a and the disk a through which is the passage 6, screwthreaded at b to be fitted upon a suitable hollow arbor. (Not shown.) The knife-blade c is supported by the extension a and the clamp cl secured upon the extension, and lies in a groove in the inner face of disk at, as shown in Fig. 2. Extension a is cored out and re- :5 ves the threaded spindle e, which is held against lateral movement by the plug f, Fig. 3, and is provided on its outer extremity with a device, as the squared hole f, to be manipulated by a key or the like.
Knife-blade c has a fixed stud 0, Figs. 2 and 5, which engages the threads of spindle 6, so that rotation of the spindle will move the knife-blade toward and from the axis of the chuck a.
The guide 9 is a blade adjustable in the same manner as the knife, but has a rounded surface g upon its inner end, and may be adjusted to contract the size of passage 1) for the purpose of cutting smaller dowels.
To adjust either blade, the-clamp d is loosened and the screw e turned, after which the clamp is tightened, holding the blade firmly.
I claim In a dowel cutter in combination a hollow 5o chuck; a lateral extension on the chuck; a blade; a projection from the blade; a threaded spindle mounted in the lateral projection free to rotate but prevented from movement endwise and engaging with the projection from 55 the blade and a clamp to engage with one edge of the blade substantially as and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS NICHOLS.
