C. 'I'. AMMON. SAW HANDLE.
N0. 562,787. Patented June 30, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. AMMON, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
SAW-HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,787, dated June 30, 1896.
Application filed December 13,1895. Serial No. 572,038. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it ?nay concern-.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. AMMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Saw-I-Iandles 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in handles for saws, and has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap handle readily attached to and adjustable upon a saw-blade, enabling a person to attach the handle at any place below the top of the saw-blade as well as at the top. I have discovered that by attaching the handle at or near the bottom of the end of the saw blade the operator has more perfect control of the saw and the saw will run truer and more easily. It can be readily applied to any blade by simply making a hole in the blade at the desired point.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw with my handle applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section with a portion broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4 is a View of the yeke removed, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the drawbolt.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of ordinary form, through the center of the cross portion a of which is an opening A', through which is designed to pass a draw-bolt B, screwthreaded at one end, as at b, to receive a thumb-nut or analogous device D. The shank of this belt is split or slotted, as seen at d, to
embrace the end of the saw-blade, and the arms of the bolt are perforated transversely to receive a screw or bolt E, which is passed through the openings in the shank of the bolt and through the hole in the saw-blade. The handhold of the handle is made sufficiently large to make room for the thumb-nnt.
F is a yoke of any suitable material, preferably brass, the opposite armsf of which are perforated to receive the screws G or other means which secure the blade to the cross portion of the handle near its attachment to the saw-blade, and the portion F' of this twin blade, which extends over the cross portion a of the handle, has an opening, as shown, through which passes the screw-bolt.
In practice the saw-blade may be provided with one or any desired number of holes X, according to the position in which it is desired to affix it. The handle is applied by placing the end of the saw-blade between the arms of the draw-bolt and in the bifurcations K of the extensions A of the handle. The belt or screw E is then passed through the openinge of the arms of the draw-boli: and the coincident opening in the saw-blade and may or may not receive a nut upon its end. The thumb-nnt D is then applied to the threaded end of the draw-belt and by screwing the same up the handle is drawn firmly onto and rigidly fast upon the saw-blade. It can be readily adjusted to any desired position or at any desired angle with relation to the blade.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination with the handle having slotted extensions, of a saw-blade inserted in the slots of said extensions,a draw-bolt passed longitudinally through the handle and slitted to embrace the saw-blade and secured thereto and a thumb-nnt on the threaded end of the draw-bolt, a yeke on said handle and having a portion through which the draw-bolt passes and secured to the handle by means passed therethrough and bearing against the end of 9 IOO low the top of the blade thereof, provided with a yoke through which the draw-boltpasses, said yoke extending upon opposite sides of the handle, and Screws passed therethrough and through the handle, adapted to 'bear against the end of the saw-blade, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony Whereof I 'have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES T. AMMON. W'itnesses:
GEORGE J. KRIEGER, ALUNZI CUNNINGHAM.
