DANIEL HARKINS, OF HUDSON, M ASSACHUSETTS.
HAND LE ATTACHMENT FOR FILES AND SlMlLAR TOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,197, dated August 21, 1888.
Application filed May 5!, 1888.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL HARKINS, of Hudson, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments for Files and Similar Tools, of which the following, taken in connection with the acconr panying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to the attachment of handles to files and similar tools; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will readily be understood by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a file having a handle secured thereto according to the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a sectional plan of the handle end of the same, the cutting plane being on line a: a: on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a sectional elevation of said handle end, the cutting-plane being on line 3 3 on Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a similar view of the same with the handle secured to the file so that it will project therefrom at right angles to its edge. Fig. 5 represents an elevation of the attaching end of the shank of thehandle, and Fig. 6 represents an end view of the same.
In the drawings, A is a file of the usual construction provided at one end with the threaded shank a, and the notches b b at either side of and equidistant from the shank a. The threaded shank a passes through a suitable hole, 0, Fig. 5, in the enlarged end ofthc shank "3, which passes through the wooden handle (Land is clamped thereto by means of the nut 0 upon the outer end of said shank 1;, all in a well-known manner. The enlarged end of said shank I is provided with two ribs, (1 d, which are as far apart as said file is thick, and are of such a shape as to fit the notehesbb, to prevent said handle G from turning about the shank a when said ribs (1 d have been forced into position by means of the clamping-nut c, which may be either a thumbnut, as shown, or a fiat-sided nut to be turned by a wrench, without in any way altering the principles of my invention. 3y securing the handle to the file in this manner-that is, at; right angles to, rather than in a line with, its working-sur- Serial No. 273,179. face--the workman is able to easily file in places which it is almost impossible to file with the handles attached to the tiles in the usual manner. Again, the workman is able to get a firm hold upon the handle and perform his work withoutliability of barking his knuckles, as is often done when using a file as new constructed.
\Vhen it is desired to use the edge of the file, the clamping-nut c is removed and the file is turned quarterway around, so that its end will enter between the ribs (1 d and into the slotfin the enlarged end of the shank B, and then the nutcis replaced upon the shank a, and the handle is firmly clamped upon the file in an obvious manner, as shown in Fig. 4.
\Vith the foregoing the operation and ad vantages of my invention will be so apparent as to need no further description.
It will be readily understood by reference to the drawings that the handle C may be so secured to the file that any one of its four working-sides may be used, as desired.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A file or similar tool having two or more workingsurfaoes and provided with a shank projecting from one end, and also provided with two transverse notches formed in the end of said file a distance apart equal to the thickness of said file, in combination with a handle provided with a transverse hole through which said shank is adapted to pass, and also pro vided with two ribs so located and of such a size as to enter and fit said notches in the end of said file or similar tool when it is desired to use one of its broader surfaces, or between which the end of the file is adapted to enter and be held in position thereby when it is desired to use one of its narrower surfaces, and a nut mounted upon the outer end of said shank to clamp said handle to said file or similar tool at right angles to its workingsurface.
2. A file or similar tool having a threaded shank projecting from one end, and also provided with a transverse notch on either side thereof cut into or formed in the end of said file, in combination with a handle provided with a transverse hole through which said shank is adapted to pass, and also provided with two parallel ribs so located and of such a size as to enter and fit said notches in the end scribing witnesses, on this 7th day of May, A.

upon the outer end of said shank to clamp said T handle to said file or similar tool at rightangles DAL IEL HARKINS' 5 to one of its working-surfaces. W'itnesses:
In testimony whereof I have signed my name \VALTER E. LOMBARD,
