T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES WILLIAM DA- vIs and SoLoN MCGAW', citizens ofthe United States, residing at Fayetteville, in the county of Lincoln and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Bit and Bit Attachment for Hollow Angers and other Edged Tools,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to angers, and particularlyto that class known. as hollow augers; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective means for applying and adjusting the bits iu a positive manner and without requiring complex manipulation and with a more accurate result, as well as equal inward extent of the cutting edges of the bits.
The invention consists in the construction Aand arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and explained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an auger embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation oi the Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a detailed perspective viewof the parts ot the improved attachment.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the severalV views.
The numeral 1 designates a tubular body of ordinary form, having slots 2 at diametri@- ally-opposite points for obvious reasons, and an angular extremity 3 for attachment to or engagement by a holding or gripping device, the opposite end of the body 1 being provided with an extended head 4, having a flat face 5, with diametric slots G and a central opening 7, leading to the body 1. The face 5 provides a rest against which the work is placed, and is consequently made smooth or even and of sufficient extent as to practically serve its intended purpose. The inner or rear side of the head 4 has inclined seats S, formed at diagonally-opposite points therein, which are regularly inclined outwardly toward the face 5 and lead to the slots G. In these seats 8 bits 9 are adjustably mounted and have theirbeveled cutting edges 10 exposed through the slots 6 in the manner clearly illustrated vby Fig. 2, and in consequenceof the diagonal position of the seats 8 I the beveled cutting edges 10 of the bits will project beyond the reverse walls of theopposite slots 6. Each of the bits has a longitudinally-disposed slot 1l and a rear inturned angular end 12, having a centrally-slotted edge to provide a seat, as at 13. On the bit 9 a cap 14 is mounted and constructed with a screw-opening 15 to receive a holding-screw 16, adjustable in a screw-opening 17 in an adjacent portion of the head 4 and extending through the slot 11. 'lhe cap 14 also has an inclined'or inwardlydirected extremity 18 adjacent the inturned end 12 of the bit, and extending through the said extremity 1S is a screw-opening 19 to adj ustably receive the screw-shank 20 of an adjusting-screw 2l, having a head 22 standing outwardly from the inturned end 12 of the bit and also provided with a collar 23 at a distance from the forward extremity of said head to provide a circumferential groove 24, which acts in conjunction with the seat 13 in the said inturned end 12 of the bit. When the screw-shank 2O is located in the extremity 1S of the cap 14, a movement of the said bit either toward or away from the inturned end 18 of the cap may be acquired without changing the position of the head of the screw relatively to said inturned end of the bit in view of the collar 23 and the groove 24. To obtain this adjustment, it will be understood that the screw 16 will remain in fixed position, the said bit being permitted to slide by reason of the provision of the slot 11.
Thescrew-heads 22 and the inturned ends 12 of the bits are located nearer the body 1 and wholly inward from the plane of the seats 8, and the said bits are thereby made easily adjustable, and a slight turning of the screwhead in either one or both will produce a quick response, as desired, at'the beveled cutting ends 10 relatively to the walls of the slots 6, through which they project, and thus have the said cutting edges of 1 .the bits operate either light or heavy.
It will be understood that the present form of au ger is particularly inten ded for constructing tenons on the ends of pieces of material and that the latter are caused tobear against the face 5 with sufficient pressure to have the cutting edges 10 carry on their work, and thereby gradually and regularly produce the tenen, the reduced portion of the device being IOO operated on passing into the body 1 through the opening 7, and the length of the tenon will depend upon the length of the body, as will be readily apparent, unless the work is removed previous to the reduced portion thereof having its end strike the rear wall of the said hollow body.
The improved bit attachment has been shown applied to a hollow auger to illustrate one form of practical -use of the same; but it will be understood that it is proposed to apply the same to anj7 tool to which it may be adapted and wherein the holding-screw 16, serving to clamp the cap 14 or retain the latter in a fixed position and also permit the bit to move between the cap and the seat therefor, will be found beneeial and advantageous.
The improved bitadjusting devices set forth possess manifold advantages and require less labor in obtainingr a sensitive adjustment than other analogous devices heretofore used, and to suit various applications changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we vclaim is- 1. In a hollow auger, the combination of a hollow body having a head, diam etrically-opposed slots, and inner inclined seats directed toward the said slots, and bit attachments disposed on the said seats, and each consisting of a longitudinally-slotted bit with an inwardly and rearwardly extending outer end, a cap mounted on the said bit, and also having its outer end directed inwardly parallel with the end of the bit and formed with a screwaperture,an adj usting-serew having a circumferential groove portion engaging the inturned end of the bit and its shank located in the screw-threaded aperture in the inturned end of the cap, and means for connecting the cap and the bit to the head.
2. A bit attachment for tools, comprising a bit and a cap with inturned rear extremities, an adj Listing-screw engaging said extremities and operating to move the bit, and a holdingscrew extending through the cap and the bit into the support for said devices to hold the cap in fixed clamping position, the bit being slotted longitudinally to permit the screw to pass therethrough and allow adjustment of the said bit.
