J. HOWARD GIBSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-HOLDER.
fiPEGIP-ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,718, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed December 15, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. HOWARD GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing'in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Holders, which in1- provement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front view of a toolholder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a tool-holder having a screw against which the tool abuts, so that the tool may be readily adjusted and securely held without liability to slip or shift, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings. Arepresents the socket of a tool-holder, and B the shank thereof. The socket is open at both ends, and internally threaded opposite to the tool-receiving end for the engagement of a screw, 0, against which the inner end of the tool abuts, said socket having also fitted to it a screw, D, which extends at a right angle to the tool, and is adapted to tighten against the side thereof.
When the tool is fitted in the socket, the screw 0 is rotated relatively to the required adjustment of the tool, and the inner end of the tool bears against the inner end of the said screw 0. The screw D is tightened against the tool, whereby the latter is prevented from displacement, and as the screw 0 is in the direct line of the tool it receives the pressure or thrust of said tool, whereby the latter is firmly sustained and prevented from moving or slipping.
As the tool is sharpened, and consequently becomes shorter, it may be adjusted within the socket by means of the screw 0, and further held by the same in the advantageous manner hereinbefore stated.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tool-holder having screws which are fit ted to the socketot the same, one of thescrews being in the direction of the length of thetool, and the other screw being at an anglethcreto, substantially as described.
J. HOWARD GIBSON. \Vitnesses:
