Description
No Model!) J. UHL. TOOL FOR HOLDING SCREW HOOKS, 850.
No. 510,104. Patented Dec. 5, 1893.
SZZ:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH UHL, OF WIIRZBURG, GERMANY.
TOOLFEOR HOLDING SCREW-HOOKS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION formingrpart of Letters Patent No. 510,104, dated December 5, 1893.
Application filed January 13, 1893. Serial 110.458.212. (No model.) Patented in France July 9, 1892, No. 222,893.
burg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented a new.
and useful Improvementin Bit-Stocks or Tools for Holding Screw-Hooks or Like Articles, of
which the followingis a full, clear, and exact 7 description, and for which Letters Patent have been obtained in France, No. 222,893, dated July 9, 1892.
My invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 isa side view of my improved tool. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the same attached to a screw-hook. Fig. 3 is an end view of theimproved tool. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view showing the tool attached to a brace or bit-stock. Fig. 6 isa side view, partly in section, of the tool with a screw-driver bit applied thereto. Figs. 7 and 8 show a device for screwing in and withdrawing screw-eyes, and adapted to be held in said tool.
In inserting or withdrawing screw hooks, it has hitherto usually been necessary to use flat pliers, or even cutting pinchers. Now, to make the use of such instruments unnecessary, a tool, forming the subject-matter of this invention, has been designed, which may be handled easily and safely, and is preferably used in conjunction with, or as a part of, a hand brace or bit-stock.
a. represents the stem of my improved tool, which stem is adapted to fit into an ordinary crank brace and has a suitable head b. The head I) is provided with a transverse slot d, into which a screw-hook c, or the like, may fit, or in which a variety of tools, such as shown at k, l, are adapted to be introduced.
6 is a pressure plate, which is pressed from the under side by a coil spring f contained within the opening 9 of the head I). The plate e is held vertically on the one hand by means of the surfaces, Fig, 4E, forming the sides of the head, and on the other hand by means of the screw g, which fits into the part t' of the tool. A large variety of tools or bits can be employed in connection with my improved tool, by simply providing them with hook-like ends, as shown in Figs. 2 and 7.
In order to put my device into use, say for withdrawing a screw-hook, it is merely necessary to force the pressure plate 9 back far enough to allow the hook to be inserted within the slot d, when the pressure plate can be released, allowing it to press upon and hold the hook in position,as shown in Fig. 2. The brace can then be attached in the usual manner and the screw-hook withdrawn. When it is desired to use any of a variety of tools, they are inserted and held in substantially the manner above described.
It will be seen that I, by my invention, not only provide a device for interchangeably using a variety of tools, but also provide one which is adapted to withdraw screw-hooks, screw-eyes, &c.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, in a bit stock or tool, of the body with a head b, having a transverse bit receiving slot 01 a portion of which extends into the head below the surface thereof, and a spring pressed presser-plate e, operating in said transverse slot substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, in a bit stock or tool, of the body with a head I) having a transverse slot (1 therein, spring-pressed presser-plate e and a tool or bit having a projection at substantially right angles to the axis thereof, which projection is adapted to fit within the slot d and be held therein by the presser-plate e, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH UHL.
Witnesses A. HEINIG,
K. DIPPOLD.
