SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,513, dated February 19, 1 895.

Be it known that I, LYMAN S. IVIARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Tool-Holders for Lathes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in [o the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in r 5 tool-holders for lathes, and its object is to provide a novel construction of the same, by which the cutter can be readily adjusted with relation to the work in a rapid and efi'icient manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool-holder, constructed 2 5 in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. ment. Near one end this block is formed with an annular peripheral groove F, with which engages a screw-bolt or pin G passing through a screw-threaded hole in the holder. Near its other end the block is formed with a beveled cam or eccentric groove E, which extends partly around the periphery thereof, and with which one of the edges of the rectangular cutter engages.
The operation will be readily understood. The holder is connected with a lathe in any suitable manner and the block H is turned so that the deepest part of the groove E will register with the inclined groove in the holder. The cutter is now inserted in the groove O, and can move up and down therein so as to be properly adjusted with respect to the Work. When adjusted, the block is turned by means of a wrench when the camface of the groove E will engage with the rear edge of the cutter and clamp the latter against the front walls of groove 0, thus firmly holding the cutter in place. By turning the block in the opposite direction, the cutter is released, and may be adj usted, or removed entirely, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a tool holder for lathes, having a groove near its front end to receive a tool or cutter and formed with an intersecting transverse recess, of the rotatable block seated in said opening havinga pe ripheral cam or eccentric groove, and an annular peripheral groove and a screw-bolt or pin engaging with said annularrecess, substantially as described.
