COMBINATION TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1912. Serial No. 682,239.
Patented July 16, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLTAM HANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Tool-Holders,
of which the follow-ing is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive holder of the character specified, for use with lathe planer and shaper, wherein a single improved implement will perform the functions of three now necessary, and by means of which a great economy in time, and labor is efiected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudin'al section, showing the parts in one position. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the parts in another position, and Fig. 4 is partial longitudinal section, at right angles to Fig. 2.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the shank or handle 1 of the tool holder is slotted at its npperend, transversely, as shown at 2, to form a pair of spaced lugs 2 and the holder proper 3 is provided with a reduced-lug 4, which is received in the slot. The lug 4 is fan-shaped, and is provided with a transverse opening 5. The outer end of the lug is rounded on the are of acirclewhose center is the opening 5, and the lug has an arc-shaped seriesof recesses 6 on one face, near the rounded end. The
body portion of the holder is provided with an opening 7, for receiving the tool 8, and the said opening is polygonal in cross-sec tion to fit the tool,-and is arranged at an angle to the shank 1, and to the lug 4.
The tool is held in place by means of a set screw 9 which is threaded t-hrough'the' body portion of the holder and engages the tool. The holder is also provided with a ledge or lip 10 at one side of one end of the opening 7, against which the face of the 'tool rests, as shown in Fig. 4. v
The holder is provided with a lug or with respect to'the shank on bolt the first-named lu 2 adjacent to the series of openings 6, and is provided with a plain portion 14 for engaging one ofithe said openlngs. The screw bolt 12and the screw 13 have poly onal heads, for receiving a Wrench, and the holder may swing laterally 12, when the screw 13 is released.
In the use of the device, the tool is adjusted in the proper position in the opening 7, and is held in proper position by means of the screw 9. The upper end of the lug 2 adjacent to the lower end of opening 7 is beveled, as shownat 15 to permit the tool to pass. After the tool has been placed, it it is desired to incline the tool laterally, the
screw 13 is turned out a sufiicient distance to-release the plain portion 14 from the opening 6 with which it is engaged. The holder may now be moved to either side,
swinging on -the bolt 12, and when at the desired angle the screw 13 is turned inwardly to engage the plain portion with the opening 6 in register therewith, and the holder is locked in position. The holder may thus be held .in alinement with the shank or handle, or inclined toward either side. To adJust the holder,i'the turning of but one screw is necessary.
I claim,
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a handle or shank provided at one end with a transverse slot, a holder provided with a reduced -fan shaped lug received in the slot, saidlng having a transverse opening and the hai'i'dle...l1aving an opening intersecting the slot, and register "ing with the opening of the lug, the free end of the lug being rounded on the are of a circle having its center at the transverse opening, said lug having an arc-shaped series of recesses in one face, the holder havin a second lug extending parallel with the taco of the lug provided with the recesses and in spaced relation, the second lug having an opening registering with the transverse opening of the lug, a screw bolt having a plain portion passing through the openings of the lag and having a threaded portion engaging thehandle, and a screw threaded through the handle andhaving a plain p01- tion at its inner end for engaging one of the recesses.
-2. A device of the character specified, comprising a shank or handle having a transverse slot at one end, a holder for the tool provided with a pair of substantially parallel spaced lugs, one of the lugs being fan-shaped and'entering the slot, the other lug overlying the face of the handle, a screw bolt having a plain portion passing through the lugs and a threaded portion at the end remote from the head engaging the handle, said'fan-shaped lug having an arcshaped series of recesses in the face adjacent to the other lug, a screw threaded into the handle and having a plain portion for engaging a recess.
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a shank or handle provided at one end with a transverse recess, a holder having means for receiving a tool and provided with a substantially fan-shaped lug received in the recess,'a bolt pivotally connecting the holder and the handle, said bolt passing through the lug, said lug having a series of recesses inone face arranged on the arc of a circle having its center at the bolt, and a screw threaded through the handle for engaging one of the recesses.
4. A device of the character specified, comprising a shank or handle and a holder for the tool, said shank having a transverse recess at one end and the holder having a a screw threaded through the handle for engaging one ofthe openings. I
5. Adevice of the character specified, comprising a shank or handle and a holder for the tool, said shank having a transverse recess at one end and the holder having a lug received in the recess and of greater widththan-the shank, a ivotal connection between the handle and t e lug for permitting the holder to swing to either side of the shank, and means for holding thefholder in adjusted position. v I
