Letters Patent No. 93,580, dated August l0, 1869.
:Mrnoven -TooL-HoLn'ER.
The Schedulel referred to in these Letters Patent `and. vpari: of the Same.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. BAILEY, of Woonsocket, in the county of Providence, and in the State of Rhode Island, have invented new and usefulll'nprovements in Tool-Holders for turning,T iron and other metals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, .and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.`
Figure l represents a side yelevation of' the too1-' holder.
.Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same, in which the cutter o1' bit is not shown. K 1
Figure 3, a perspective view of the strap.
The nature of my invention consists irl-providing a tool-holder in which the tool or bit is held in an angular groove in the end of the shank by a strap, and gib, and key, as hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, in the drawings, represents the shank, which may be made of cast-steel or other suitable metal.
The end where the bit is inserted is bevelled, as clearly shown in fig. 1, and is provided with an angular groove, a.; and, for a short distance, this end is recessed out on-both sides, the form of the recesses being like that of the jaws of the strap B, which embrace this end, and fit snugly in the recesses of the shank.
A rectangular, slightly-tapering hole is made in this portion ofthe shank, corresponding with sirnilar holes in the jaws of the strap, in which the gib andkey are inserted. i
B represents the strap, ofthe forni clearly shown in ig.'3 of' the drawings. The inner side of its beveiled, rounded portion is provided with an angular groove, 71, similar to the groove in the bevelled end of the shank, its openside being toward the jaws-sothatwhen itis placed on the shank, a square hole will be formed, ruuning diagonally through these two' 'parts of the toolholder, in which the tool or bit is inserted.
J and C represent a giband key of the usual forni,
l by which the strap isdrawny tightly to the bit, andthe latter thus rmly secured between shank of the tool-holder. I
' W'hat I claim as my invention, and vdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The shank, with its angular groove, the strap, with its angular groove, the gib C, and keyC', in combination with a vcutting-tool, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification signed by me, this 17th day of May, 1869. f
JOSEPH R. BAILEY.
