Description
Oct. 26, 1948. F. E. suLLlNGER CUTTER CHAIN` Filed July 10, 1944 Patented Oct. 26, 1948 CUTTER CHAIN Francis E. Sullinger, Claremont, N. H., assigner to Joy Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Pennsylvania Application July 10, 1944, Serial No. 544,208
, This invention relates to cutter chains and morel particularly tol an improved ychain blo-ck and bit holder for a cutter chain especially designed for use in the cutting of coal or the like.
An objectv of the present invention is to provide an improved cutter chain. Another object is to provide an improved cutter chain having improved means for securing a 'cutter bit in cutn ting position on the chain block lug. A further object is to provide an improved chain block lug of a novel design. A still further object is to provide an improved bit holder for securing a cutter bit on the block. Still another object is to provide an improved bifurcated bit holder adapted to straddle the lug of 'a chain block. Yet another object is to provide an improved pivotal mounting for the holder on the chain block.
Y Other'` objects and advantages of the invention will, however, hereinafter morefully appear.
In the accompanying drawing there is shown:
for purposes of illustration one form which the invention may assume in practice.
In this drawing:

Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in central longitudinal vertical section taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig, 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the bit, block and holder, illustrating the manner of removing the cutter bit from the block.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on lines 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the improved chain block.
Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the cutter bit.
Fig 8 is a perspective View of the improved bit holder.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invention disclosed herein, there is shown a cutter chain comprising a chain block I, strap links 2 and pivot pins 3 for pivotally connecting the block and links together.
The chain block h-as a lateral lug l provided with vertical grooves -or recesses 5, 5 at its opposite sides, and a horizontal upper plane surface 6, disposed at right angles to the grooves and eX- tending therebetween, provides a seat for the inner end of a cutter bit. Upstanding from the lug at the forward side of the grooves is an abutment 1 providing a rearwardly facing, forwardly and outwardly inclined surface 8. The block lug at the rear sides of the grooves 5 is transversely arcuately slotted at 9, and the narrow central portion l!! of the lug between the grooves 5 has a transverse opening II. Threaded within an inwardly and downwardly inclined opening I2 at the forward side of the lug is an adjustable element herein preferably a set screw I3.V The opening I 2 cuts through at I4 the sides of the narrow portion I'Il of the lug at the bottoms of the vertical grooves 5 so that the inner end of Vthe set screw projects into the grooves.
The improved bit holder is generally designated l5 and comprises an outer head I6 and an inner shank I'I, The holder head is recessed or socketed at I 8 for the reception of a cutter bit, and, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, the shank is bifurcated so that the holder straddles the block lug with spaced apart, parallel side portions I9, I9 of the shank received in the lug grooves 5, Thus the outer surfaces of the holder lie substantially within the lateral limits of the block. The side portions I9 of the holder shank have curved projections 20 at their rearward sides, and these projections are shaped to t the transverse grooves 9 to provide a pivotal mounting for the holder. A transverse pin 2| is tted in the opening l I and projects within openings 22 in the side portions of the shank to secure the holder on its, pivotal mounting. The shank portions I9 have inclined forwardly facing surfaces 23 with which the inner end of the set screwv engages concurrently for swinging the holder on its pivotal mounting. The'upper portions ofthe rear walls of the lug grooves are rearwardly inclined at 24 to permit free swinging of the holder on its pivotal mounting 9, 20.
The cutter bit is generally designated 25 and is of a conventional design provided with a pair of cutting points so that the bit may be reversed when one cutting point becomes dull. The bit body is generally of triangular shape in side elevation and has plane cutting faces 26, 25 lying in the sides of the triangle and terminating in cutting points 21 at the opposite extremities of the bit body. The body is generally diamond shape in cross section and the cutting faces are of elongated diamond shape in outline, as shown in Fig. 7.
When the cutter bit 25 is in cutting position on the chain block, itsinner inactive cutting face rests on the upper plane surface 6 of the block lug, and the bit body is received in the recess I8 in the holder head, and the head-recess is V-shaped to `conform to the upper portion of the bit, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner portion of the active cutting face of the cutter bit rests against the inclined surface 8 on the front abutment 1. When the set screw I3 is adjusted inwardly in the opening t2, its inner end engages both of the side portions of the holder shank, and the holder is swung on its pivotal mounting to clamp rmly the cutting faces of the bit against the surfaces 6 and 8 on the block. When it is desired tofreleasethecutter bit, theset A screwY may be loosened to permit swinging of the holder on its pivotal mounting into the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the bit may be removed forwardly from the holder recess over the top of thergont lug '1.
As a result of this inventionan -improvedcutter chain is provided wherein agcutterbit is `*held in cutting position on the chain block in an improved manner. By the provision ofuthegrooved bloclr lug and the bifurcated holder, an extremely rugged and simple construction is attainedrBy the improved pivotal-mounting for the holder t and the, varralngement of. the -holder.. onthe block 111g, 'the cutterbit isyrmlyolampedminggutting position onther, block, andthe bitmay be readily released @vliesA slasned.` ...Other tussenand.Y advantagespfthe inventionv will loe. clearlyfapparent ,-:tethosaslslledsn the-art.
